[G&M] Chinese confiscate Apple iPads in name dispute

Authorities have seized Apple iPads from retailers in a city in northern China due to a dispute with a domestic company that says it owns the iPad name, an official said Monday. The Chinese company said it is asking for similar action in more than 20 other cities.

The dispute with Shenzhen Proview Technology threatens to complicate Apple Inc.'s (AAPL-Q499.586.161.25%) efforts to sell its popular tablet computer in China, its fastest-growing market.

I suspect that in this case it smells more like money grab of that local company.

Am I the only one that thinks this is some serious BS? Proview sold Apple the rights to the name years ago.

Nope, in many countries, different companies have release product under the name iPad way before apple. When apple decide to release iPad they bought all the right to that name, expect they somehow forgot to buy the name in China.

I remember reading in the news that somehow either Proview or Apple mess it up and forgot to buy the right in china.

That seems a little fishy to me. How can a corporation as big and with as many lawyers as Apple "forget" to get the rights for the name in China? Looks to me like Proview is just making stuff up and getting away with it because the Chinese government is backing them. Of course that's just speculation on my part. I'll be interested in hearing the facts.

I would not be surprised if the gov't sided with the Chinese company...Anyone watch top gear? How the Chinese had made a BMW X5 knock off, and when BMW tried to sue the company, China said it did not resemble the X5?
