Alot of really stupid and pointless posts. If you want a Smart phone go buy one if you want the Vita go buy one. If you have nothing constructive to say or to add & or you dont plan to buy the Vita then just shut it.
It's not right now, but it may be in the near future. Take into account also the ability to output your game to your HDTV either wirelessly or wired, using the smartphone or slate as a controller -- not as good as physical controllers of course, but you're still able to play games with them.

Technology is advancing rapidly, with the PowerVR SGX600 series graphics, we'll be able to do a whole lot more graphically.

That's the key right there to why this is a non-argument. This so called 'Vita competition' is pure fantasy right now. Speculating on the possible future of the smartphone as a legitimate gaming device =/= a reason why smartphones are a better choice for portable gaming than the Vita.

I was never saying smartphones are a better choice, only that they may be in the near future. I'm thinking of the iPad 3 right now, if it comes with a SGX643MP2 it'll be five times more powerful graphically than the Vita, and ten times more powerful than the iPad 2. That's quite a bit of grunt, and should allow for some nice eye candy. I'm not sure how big the Vita user base is, and how many will sell, but I see smartphone and slate users as a much bigger market. Combine the two, I think we'll get some attention. All we need is a couple of really in-depth games, like the Vita might have, and if they sell well, then thumb.gifbiggrin.gif

I'm sure even if that happened portable gaming consoles would still be quite popular, and I'm sure there would be many who'd refuse to use virtual controls, but I'd like to be able to have some good games on my smartphone/slate.

Even if an Ipad 3 does have a better GPU who is going to develop games for it? Great just what I want to spend 600-1000 dollars on a stupid Ipad3 with no developer support & childish kiddy games. great now I have a souped up Cut the rope. Yay

Gaming is not the first purpose of any tablet. The iPad3 is also going to be technically superior to virtually any portable device on the market right now, which is why the price is going to be high. (the screen of the ipad 3 alone will be over 5 times higher resolution than the vita.)

That being said, a large screen tablet will provide a ton more functionality when it comes to scenarios that use it... and yes, that will include some games. Undoubtedly, the iPad 3 will also have superior battery life as well as a monstrous library of apps to choose from. Those items plus the incredible screen and specs will actually make it a better value for money than the Vita.

But I could simply use any old device or a kindle fire if I wanted these things. Ipad 3 still isn't for gaming and there is no evidence to support that things will be any different. No one is going to buy an ipad3 because someday gaming on a tablet might be good, when the Vita is already a capable gaming device. They are just different devices man get in your head! This is a gaming device, it will smoke any phone or tablet for that and there is no supporting evidence that anything is comparable right now.

People buying the Vita don't want it to be a ipad3 with other things in mind before gaming... we want gaming first and foremost.

People buying the Vita don't want it to be a ipad3 with other things in mind before gaming... we want gaming first and foremost.

A Vita is an accessory, much as an iPad 3 is an accessory. What's the difference? There are droves of Apple fans and only a handful of truly hardcore gamers that the Vita appeals to. On top of this, a Vita can only game, while an iPad 3 has the capability of playing games and much much more.

I think you're going to be surprised at what gets developed for the iPad 3, given its specs. Somebody is going to create an amazing game on it that will more than likely be at least Vita quality if not higher. Now you get it through your head that both of these devices will compete with each other, and it's almost guaranteed that even though the iPad 3 is over twice the price of a Vita, the iPad 3 will outsell the Vita by a lot. It's called a fanbase, and unfortunately Apple's fanbase is much larger and wider than that of Sony's gaming crowd.

I stick by my initial assumption that the Vita as a device will probably fail simply because it does not appeal to a wide enough audience. A 3DS provides a very unique solution with 2 screens, a built-in 3D effect, and tons of nintendo exclusive titles that the given fanbase eats up each time a new game is released. The Vita, by comparison, is a souped up smartphone-like device with thumbsticks, and it does not carry the clout needed to survive a world that has largely gone mobile.

I honestly hope that Sony learns that building the most powerful consoles that they can isn't good enough anymore. Smartphones and tablets are much weaker than their desktop counterparts, and yet they are the most competitive market in the world at the moment. It's all about market appeal, and in this case, Sony just doesn't have it anymore.

Man this thing is so epic. I can't over how insane the color is on this. Sometimes can't even tell where the screen ends! And I honestly thought 960x544 on the 5" screen would be terrible since i've been spoiled by the iphones retina display. I was totally wrong. I think I went overboard for release and bought quite a few games (uncharted, wipeout, escape plan, mvc3 and the FEB came with little deviants) but they are all pretty good. Also the graphics are really good (some games aren't native resolution though). Can't wait for little big planet and gravity rush in may. Not to mention this thing is FAST. You can pause and resume games like nothing happened. Overall I think this is above and beyond my expectations.

EDIT: You guys are STILL going on about the stupid smartphone vs gaming device argument. Jesus, give it a break. You don't want a vita because your shiny phone can play angry birds, we get it. Move along.

Mad Pistol maybe you should stay out of this thread, you've said your opinions ( which are indeed just opinions ), and its obvious that there are plenty of people here that don't agree with you. It's obvious Sony's target audience is still around, and I don't see any of these casual gaming devices taking that away even if the resolution is higher. There is no standardized control option outside of touch yet for these devices, and until there is they will never be as good. So yeah please move along.

When the ipad3 has real controls with games like uncharted or new final fantasy ips then you can talk, until then its all just guessing.

As a 3DS owner trust me I know the Vita has a very big market to appeal to as well. Two screens isn't even important anymore, its bordline pointless, and not enough people like 3D anyway.

As a 3DS owner trust me I know the Vita has a very big market to appeal to as well. Two screens isn't even important anymore, its bordline pointless, and not enough people like 3D anyway.

Don't try and bully someone out of a thread simply on the basis that their opinions are different than yours. The point of these threads is to discuss the validity of these products, and I intend to do that, whether you like it or not. By that same token, there are many people that agree with me. However, considering that this is a place for hardcore users/gamers, it is natural that there would be a population on here that the Vita does indeed appeal to. It's an attractive device, but I do believe that it has come at a time where mobile consoles are becoming devices that no longer correspond with market trends. There was a time where mobile consoles such as the game boy and DS were the only options for on-the-go games. That is no longer the case. Even if games on the Vita are more complex, the time of mobile consoles is drawing to a close.

As for your 3DS, two screens = 1 gaming screen and 1 information screen. I have a PC with 2 screens, and I cannot go back to one monitor simply because you can play a game and monitor other programs simultaneously. In a way, twice the screens = twice the usability. In the case of the 3DS, one gaming screen and one map screen, or a text screen, etc.

Now, I challenge you to read about the current state of the gaming market. I analyze the big picture of how a device fits into the current market, and I make a very through and well thought out assessment of how a device will appeal to the market. The hardcore gaming market in the mobile sector is dying because of new mobile devices and an ever-growing mainstream gaming crowd where gaming is an after thought compared to social networking. No one is denying that the Vita is a great piece of hardware, but then again... so was the Dreamcast.

Read this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/feb/19/playstation-vita-ps-sony-review

There are other articles that also take the same stance as I do. The Vita will probably not succeed simply because the market has shifted. There is no doubt about it.
