Taxes (NYC), large game prices, and massive memory card prices are the things that make me not want to get the Vita. I mean, I'll literally have no money left and be left with 1 game and maybe an 8GB memory card. The prices add up fast.

Booo to Sony and the proprietary Memory cards and other junk you have to buy to make it worth while!

1. A GPS has only one purpose. It cannot be used for anything other than that. It has no access to outside information other than the GPS satellites that it interfaces with. Thus it is a self-contained unit. By the very definition of the market, it is positioned to be non-competitive with other mobile devices simply because it is only designed for one task.
2. (subjective) A stand alone GPS is already outclassed by smartphones since virtually all smartphones not only have a GPS, but they also interface with the internet to get search results for locations in real time. A stand alone unit must have periodic map and location updates, while a smart phone does not need this as it always accesses an external database when in use.
Since the vita is positioned as an all-in-one media device (videos, pictures, music, internet, and complex games), it falls into a competitive state with smartphones. Like it or not, they are competitors. Now, if you remove the camera, 3G connectivity, GPS, Smartphone-like internals, and MP3 player, suddenly you have a device that DOES NOT compete with smartphones as it does not have similar features. It is now a dedicated gaming device, much like a stand alone GPS is a dedicated device. Also, I'm starting to get tired of the whole "angry birds" argument. Don't people realize that angry birds was a fad that is now dying? There are tons of other games and apps that are also very popular and far more complex than "Birds." I would appreciate it if you stop using that as an example because it does not represent where the gaming portion of the smartphone market is going. There are many far more entertaining games on the smartphone app market now.
An iPad is not a handheld you say? Wikipedia has a nice article on that. In fact, tablets are classified as a mobile device also known as a handheld. It even specifically mentions the iPad in the article.
Nintendo made a killing on the Wii because of the audience they targeted. Regardless of whether it was a fad or not, we now have the Playstation Move and Xbox360 Kinect which are both more advanced versions of the Wii's motion control system. The Wii revolutionized the world of consoles, believe it or not, and it would be foolish for either company to ignore this type of input control on their next generation of consoles. The Wii proved that the market does exist. If anything, Nintendo had absolutely no clue how successful the Wii was truly going to be, so they had no clue how to make good games for it.
With all of that being said, I guess we'll just watch sales numbers on the Vita. With any luck, my predictions about the Vita are wrong. I guess we'll see in the coming year or two.

By far the most complex game I have ever played on my iPhone is temple run, which is still a far cry from being a real game, I mean all you do is tap the screen to make the guy jump or slide to make him duck, and swipe left/right to turn.

Infinity blade looks cool but really is just a tech demo as far as im concerned.

Please, name me some games on the iOS app store that are as good as a vita game, or a ps3 game. I will gladly try them out.

Your whole arguement makes no sense. If i was looking to buy a new cellphone, I would never consider the vita even for a moment. On the other hand, if i was looking for a handeld gaming device I would never consider buying a cell phone - I would consider buying a vita or a 3DS. Smartphones are really good for web browsing, making phone calls, and listening to music, or even watching videos. They are not good for gaming, which is the main use of the vita. All the other stuff the vita can do is irrelevant, its there, you can use, it. thats all good. but its main use, what it was designed for (note button layout and 2 analog sticks) is for GAMING.

All the reviews I've read about the Vita have seemed very positive. The only thing that seems to be an issue is the UI, but I can personally get over that. The one thing I do not enjoy is the fact that I can't play a lot of my PSP games on it since I have them on UMD (Tactics Ogre, FFIV/Dissidia/Crisis Core/Tactics, etc). Luckily I have MHFU downloaded and ready to be transferred to my Vita when I pick it up!! It would be nice to be able to use two analog sticks with the game. Hopefully Capcom and Sony bring MHP3rd here for the vita now.

As for the fact that Sony is only using their own memory cards, like with the PSP, it was kind of expected. While yes, a simple SD card would have been great I can live with having to buy their own hardware. The one thing that bothers me, is the fact that the Vita (along with all consoles/handhelds nowadays) is not coming bundled with a game for the community free of charge. I am not talking a crappy PSN game either, I mean a full blown game that has the potential to get everyone hooked on the system. Take SNES for example. Every system was bundled with Super Mario World, and lets face it, it is one of the best games made (obviously this is up for debate, but you must admit, it was a very fun and addictive game!). What Sony should have done, is bundled in Uncharted (since it is their flagship launch title) and taking Nintendo's campaign strategy into consideration. It would make more people willing to buy the system, which is not cheap either. Especially with the way the economy currently is. Not many people will be able to afford the system, a game and a memory card. Giving consumers a little "gift" that actually has quality is never seen anymore. You can argue that games are given out. For example, I received a free copy of "Pain" (I think that was the name) when I got my PS3. But it was trash, plain and simple.

Apart from that though, I can't wait to get mine in a couple days. I just need to grab my memory card and I am all set to spend many sleepless nights playing this baby! lol

The point of these threads is to discuss the validity of these products, and I intend to do that, whether you like it or not. By that same token, there are many people that agree with me. However, considering that this is a place for hardcore users/gamers, it is natural that there would be a population on here that the Vita does indeed appeal to. It's an attractive device, but I do believe that it has come at a time where mobile consoles are becoming devices that no longer correspond with market trends. There was a time where mobile consoles such as the game boy and DS were the only options for on-the-go games. That is no longer the case. Even if games on the Vita are more complex, the time of mobile consoles is drawing to a close.
As for your 3DS, two screens = 1 gaming screen and 1 information screen. I have a PC with 2 screens, and I cannot go back to one monitor simply because you can play a game and monitor other programs simultaneously. In a way, twice the screens = twice the usability. In the case of the 3DS, one gaming screen and one map screen, or a text screen, etc.
Now, I challenge you to read about the current state of the gaming market. I analyze the big picture of how a device fits into the current market, and I make a very through and well thought out assessment of how a device will appeal to the market. The hardcore gaming market in the mobile sector is dying because of new mobile devices and an ever-growing mainstream gaming crowd where gaming is an after thought compared to social networking. No one is denying that the Vita is a great piece of hardware, but then again... so was the Dreamcast.
Read this: http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2012/feb/19/playstation-vita-ps-sony-review
There are other articles that also take the same stance as I do. The Vita will probably not succeed simply because the market has shifted. There is no doubt about it.

I don't care that you disagree with me, but you've said your opinion and now your just spinning your tires.

Someday tablets and phones might have good actual controls, and good hardcore games. They don't now, and until they do Vita is there for people who want that. / End thread.

If you buy an ipad3 for hardcore gaming I wouldn't hold your breath.

I have Dead Space, Resident Evil 4, Rage HD, and Minecraft PE on Ipod Touch. I think those are pretty damn good games that compete with what you will see on the Vita.

You must be joking. I too have 3 of those and they aren't anywhere near Vita quality games. Yeah you get an occasional port but you don't get much.
