About a 1 hour render on Cinema 4D usually equates to a very stable OC.

Thats what I do at least, as I do a lot of rendering (most of the time its 1 hour stuff, but if it does 1 hour, it'll do more just fine).

A lot of misinformation and fallacies in this thread.

The whole purpose of stress/stability testing is to compress as much work into as short a period of time as possible, under worst case conditions, so if an error can reasonably happen, it will happen.

It doesn't matter if your normal use will never stress the system as hard, if the system is less than stable, there is always a chance that an error will crop up and ruin what you are doing, a chance that gets progressively higher the further from stable the system is. Highly unstable systems (such as one that craps out after 7 minutes of Prime95) could well be corrupting data in the background, which will almost invariably catch up with you sooner or later.

Likewise, instability is rarely predictable. Errors are often random, which is why stress tests are run for some significant period of time. Just because you can do a task for an hour once does not mean you can do that task again without issue. However, if you can do that task for 20 hours (for example), the chances of it failing to do so for an hour at some later period are quite small.

For what some, perhaps many people use there systems for here, stability does not really matter. Your game crashes or you get a blue screen every 100 hours of play, you restart and pickup where you left off. However, some people who are doing more sensitive, or more important , work are clearly not taking stress testing as seriously as they probably should.

I agree with you, but I also disagree to a certain extent.

I think the bottom line is: if it works with what I'm using the system for, then that's all that really matters.

The problem is: if you don't stress test it, 2 months down the road, a new app or game might come out that pushes the system further than before and might cause issues. 99% of the time, we forget that we never stressed the system and don't even think that it could be an unstable overclock.

There have also been many occasions where I can prime or occt a system to hell and back, only to find it's not stable in a select game or two.

In the end, people stress or don't based off their own personal preference. I usually have a "backup" rig, which is why I upgrade only once in a blue, and when I do, I completely upgrade. This way, I can run a 36 hour prime, and not think a thing of it because I can still use another computer -- others don't necessarily have the luxury, so to them, 6 hours of priming while sleeping is good enough.

I dont use prime at all for one simple purpose.

I had a 2500k last year and when I OC'ed it as high as I could get it on air wich for me was 4.5 comfterably. I would prime blend and it would crash around an hour into it. After seeking advice from a buddy on here he gave me a peice of advice, just use the computer for its intended use, if it crashes then change stuff around. I stopped using prime after it crashed and used my same OC for another 7 months with out any BSOD. Prime takes a CPU past what stable should really be, If your gaming and cruising the web your CPU will never be 100% for 24 hours striaght therefor prime is not a good test for stability its just abusing your chip for nothing.

Like I said prime failed my OC but I used it just fine for several months following. OC your chip then use it untill it tells you it wants more vcore or whatever.thumb.gif

This is my methodology as well -- but I throw some small ffts in there for an hour or two. If it passes, then I move on.
