Why do I struggle to fit Lamptron controllers into 5.25in bays?

Thread Starter
As the title states, why don't these controllers actually conform to the 5.25in bay standard.

I own a few bay devices from Koolance and others and they all fit perfectly, just slide them in and fit the screws, very simple. The 2 different Lamptron devices I've tried are anything but simple.

I originally bought an FC8 and "tried" fitting it to a Corsair 800D, the faceplate didn't sit flush. Luckily I was able to return this item.

Then I bought 2 x FC4 which required bending of the side plates to "kind of" fit. Luckily the faceplate was flush with these so I kept them.

Now I have upgraded to a CaseLabs M10 and there is absolutely no way these controllers will fit in the standard 5.25in bay. So I am now stuck with 2 useless conrollers that while stating they conform to the 5.25in standard, actually don't.

Is there a way I can send these controllers back and have them replaced with a product that is fit for purpose.

Actually, the problem is more likely with your CaseLabs case, not necessarily with your controller. For whatever reason, I've noticed that custom cases, in particular CaseLabs and Mountain Mods, don't make their 5.25" bays wide enough. I have about 10 different bay accessories (I don't use them all at the same time, but I've basically collected them over the years), and only half of them would fit cleanly in my Mountain Mods case or my friend's M10. I could fit about three more if I basically smashed them into the bays, but a couple just wouldn't fit. However, I've never had any problems fitting those with other cases.

If you want to read more, this is the spec for 5.25" bays: ftp://ftp.seagate.com/sff/SFF-8551.PDF You could measure your Lamptron devices and see if they are out of spec. If so, then you might be able to complain to Lamptron. But if they are in spec, then there's really no one to complain to.

I guess it could be the case but I also had the same problem with my Corsair 800D. And all of my other devices fit perfectly in both cases.

The common denominator here is Lamptron. I'll post a pic when I get a chance. The side plates on the FC4 aren't even flat they start wider at the front and step inwards. I haven't owned heaps of cases but all I have owned have flat sided 5.25in bays.

I'm hoping the Lamptron Rep can chime in here.

I had the same problem with my Lamptron FC3 with my old Azza Hurricane Case...I had to use a dremel to make it fit.

I had an issue with my FC-4 and ATCS 840 too. Had to actually file away the sides of the drive bay to fit it in. And it was still such a tight fit that there wasn't even a need to put in the screws. I also came out of it with a few battle wounds if I recall.

Loved everything else about the controller though. Will be getting a Touch for my new build soon.

Wow, that's really fail. I've never owned a Lamptron device, so I really can't comment specifically on them. If the controller is as deformed as you say it is, then it probably is the controller's fault.

The corsair 800D problem we have been made aware of just recently, and as far as im aware they are making changes to the designs to accommodate this, however these issues have only arisen on a select few number of cases where fitment was a problem, however we are looking into a universal fix that doesn't alter the fitment of the controllers in cases that already conform to the normal standard of design.

Unfortunately its not entirely the controllers fault here, it is the case itself, and I have personally tested almost everyone of our controllers in at least 5 different cases here at home all of which fit just fine, LianLi cases being the best fit overall. You should still be able to return them to the store in which you purchased them, unfortunately we do not accept returns directly to the manufacturer.

The problem occurs with the distance of the mounting holes from the front of the devices. I have the FC Touch and it sits about 1/8" in from the front of the case, whereas both of my DVD drives sit flush. I like the device, but I had to modify the mounts to make it sit right.

Weird, I have two Lian Li cases, and four Lamptron FC-2s, and none of the controllers fit without using significant force, and even then they aren't completely flush. Still great products though. tongue.gif

I don't know what Corsair would need to change, if the controller is recessed while every other component is flush then the controller is at fault.

What I don't understand is how there can be so much variation between devices. I have a Pioneer DVD player, it's width is perfect, it's height is perfect, the mounting hole distance is perfect. This results in the device sitting flush with the case front. I also have a Koolance dual pump controller, it has exactly the same height and width as the Pioneer and the mounting hole are space the same as well. Which means it also sits perfectly flush. And same again for my Koolance dual bay reservoir. I might be mistaken but I thought the purpose of a standard was to avoid this kind of problem.

It's a pity because Lamptron controllers have great watt/cost performance but I refuse to modify a $600 case to fit a fan controller.
