Need help on re-formating my HDD

Hello to all, thanks for reading

I have an issue that I don't seem to be able to get around. It all started with me wanting to play Quake 4 again.

I got a new copy and installed it. It won't run. To make a very long story as short as I can here is what I think is wrong.

When I built this rig (primary specs), everything was new, right down to the HDD and OS. I had never reinstalled from a backup before. This is where I went wrong. The 1st time It didn't work, nor on the 2nd or the 3rd attempt.

The short of it is that my folder tree has repetative sub-folders (3 sets) that I can not delete. I have tried several ways, all failed. I recieve errors:

Here is the folder tree:

The highlighted folder is the one that I use. The two higher up are not. The properties box of each folder states the sizes are 17.3GB and 240MB respectively. That "Quake" folder also needs to go. It is the saved settings for a "Test User" that I created to install Quake 4 on, and see if I could get it to run under another user - not

What can I do short of backing up my files, settings and programs (correctly this time around) that I want to keep and re-formatiing (would that even work?)

I have used MS support over the telephone in the past with good results, but I would like to try this one without them...I have yet to be charged by them

Everything else works awesome! All other games that I have work, and new games (Dark Star One, Prey, et al.) all work flawlessly. The only link with Quake 4 is that I had it on my old system, and when I backed up I took it with me. Those files are either corrupted or interfering with the new install...

This folder-logic error has been bugging me for awhile, but up until now there was no apparent reason to remedy it.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried going into safe mode and deleting them? Press or hold down F8 during boot up to enter safe-mode

I am done messing with it until this weekend, then I will try just that (SafeMode boot). I will post back with results.
