Help me build a low-cost AMD rig

Hey guys, I decided I needed a low budget secondary rig for when I need to work on my main machine. It will also double as a storage and backup machine. I found an Asus M5A78L-M LX AM3 board for $30 so I picked that up. Basically I need to know a few good CPU's to look for that could handle some light gaming and power a graphics card like a 6870. The triple-core CPU's seem to be pretty good, as I'm not wanting to spend more than $80 or so (new or used, I don't care much). I've also spotted a few PII x4 on ebay for good prices, but I'm just not sure which models are good any more as there are so many to choose from. My last AMD cpu was a 955BE in ~late 2009.

Any suggestions on what I should look for would be great, as well as what RAM I should try to find to match up. I was thinking of grabbing 2x2GB sticks of the Samsung 30nm DDR3, the local Fry's sells 2GB sticks for $14 and it seems to perform very well.

There is no 125W CPU support (max TDP 95W and not suited for overclocking) so remember that.

3+1 can handle 125 watt. Hell I've overclocked a 125 watt on a 2+1.

960t FTW! its 95w and if you ever upgrade board it most likely will unlock to a six core. Plus OC potential, but strong enough stock to do what yur asking.

Ok, thanks for letting me know that. I'll assume its because of the VRM's on the board? That helps narrow it down some.

Yeah. Some people are real cautious, others (me) not. Just get some air flow over them, or sink them, or sink them and get some airflow over them. Then you should have absolutely no worries about running a 125watter.

I'm not very cautious but I think my budget excludes a lot of the 125w CPU's anyway. It looks like the top end of what I want to pay is going to get me a PII X4 8xx chip. Are those any good?

Like I posted above the 960T is the best bang for the buck Phenom quad out there.

And if you ever upgrade can most likely be unlocked to a six core. Stock its the best 95w quad core for amd cause its on the thuban arch.

Yeah I'm looking for one right now, seems like a lot of them are over $125. I'll keep an eye out for one a little cheaper, maybe used. I'm trying to get the machine together for less than $250 so that would be half my budget already redface.gif
