You probably had a 3 phase AM2-based and in any case it would NOT have been in the least bit a good idea..... :S such a motherboard should NOT have the safe current supply capacity for even a 125W at stock.  The motherboard makers are crazy to allow that rating......

Concerning ASUS in particular, ASUS does not rate their 3+1 phase VRM setups for 125W processors; it may have to do with heat and efficiency as each phase runs significantly hotter than if there were more phases; this doesn't necessarily mean the system does not have the capacity to handle 125W, but I know for sure that capacity is also an issue because I have observed several cases of protective throttling when attempting to run ASUS 3+1 phase boards with 125W processors, even at stock.

960T is 95W TDP, looks like a good option.

Okay well I ended up with a 560 BE, the guy selling me the board asked if I wanted it for an additional $30 and I said yes. Hopefully it is a decent chip. $60 shipped for the board an CPU seems like a good price to me, and closer to my goal of having it running for under $250. I already have a Fractal Arc Mini for the case and a 600w OCZ PSU I got for free, as well as a pair of 320GB 2.5" WD laptop drives which should work fine for now.

Just need to grab some RAM, and spend the rest on a decent GPU. Now that I'm thinking about it, will the 560BE bottleneck a GTX 580? I will be removing my 580 SLI from my main rig in favor of 7970's soon seeing as kepler doesn't look like it will ever come out, maybe just stick one in this secondary machine?

I think its actually cheaper at Fry's, and I don't have to wait for shipping. I'll probably grab two sticks of it today.
