[Kotaku] It Costs $40,000 to PATCH a Console Game?

Well, this is bananas. According to Double Fine's Tim Schafer, the cost of getting a patch up on a modern console (presumably he means the Xbox 360 and/or PS3) is $40,000.

That's not to upload downloadable content. That's just for a patch.

"Those systems as great as they are, they're still closed", Schafer told Hookshot. "You have to jump through a lot of hoops, even for important stuff like patching and supporting your game. Those are things we really want to do, but we can't do it on these systems. I mean, it costs $40,000 to put up a patch – we can't afford that! Open systems like Steam, that allow us to set our own prices, that's where it's at, and doing it completely alone like Minecraft. That's where people are going."

I wish they went into more detail as to why it costs that much, because that's an absurd amount for something as simple as that..

Yup, it's pretty ridiculous. Microsoft is way too strict about the Xbox Live service, I hope they take a hint from successes like Steam, and the fact that Valve refused to put Steam on Xbox Live. Maybe they're loosen the reigns a bit with Xbox Live for the next Xbox, but I'm not holding my breath. Microsoft does have to pay for the upload bandwidth that a patch takes, but I would think that the first 50MB of a patch could be free for the developer, just to keep developers from abusing the system and patching huge patches all the time. The Xbox Live service fees should more than cover the bandwidth for small patches anyway.

think about it, the update applies to millions of consoles

thats like saying it costs the US 100k for one humvee, but when you look at the overall picture, that 40k is pocket change to MS or Sony

exactly, it seems like loads of cash for a PERSON, but for a corporation, its nothing.
but then again, its the small games that take the hit.

...and still, most developers prefer to create console-only games. Amazing.

SteamValve gets a cut when they sell their games through Steam every time someone buys it, that doesn't necessarily happen on the consoles unless it's a download. They need to support the bandwidth cost somehow.
