I'm at a loss, i cant seem to make up my mind (quite common lately) on which card(s) to get.
Im choosing between two Sapphire 6950 dirt3 editions which will hopefully unlock, verses a Sapphire 7950.

They're pretty close in price, but im just not sure what one to get. If i were to get a 7950 there is a slight chance i crossfire it in (much) later days, but i dont really want to base my decision off of that. So what do ya say?rolleyes.gif

Thanks everyone!

The chance's of the dirt 3 cards unlocking is not the best, but they are potent cards. The cooler is pretty silent too. I just installed on a few days ago. Even if they don't unlock the two dirt 3's will blow the single 7950 away.

I was going to buy those cards but was told that Sapphire made it so you can't unlock them anymore. Don't know if there's any truth behind it but I ponied up the money for a 7970 instead.

7950 is slightly lower performance BUT if you plan to xfire later, 7950x2 will last longer
post #5 of 15

There is NO truth behind that ... Sapphire is THE SINGLE BEST COMPANY to buy a HD-6950 from with hopes of Unlocking one ... and also the EASIEST as they basically Pre-Flash the 6970 Bios ONTO the 2nd bios for you. Not sure where you heard this but many guys are still unlocking the DIRT3 cards today ... I know someone mentioned something on a post he read off NewEgg about it, but come on you should know by now to take those reviews with a grain of salt ... some guy upset HIS card didn't unlock now claims NONE of them will kind of post you know rolleyes.gif ... Anyways, the Chance your GPU Chip is LASER CUT and won't unlock is something AMD controlled not SAPPhIRE, it's a complete crap shoot luck of the draw type of thing, but Sapphire's tend to have good unlock rates and my Sapphire TOXIC Club has a successful unlock rate of between 81-90% ... that's the BEST you're going to get, PERIOD !

As to the OP's question ... well DUAL 6950's or 6970's (if you unlock & OC them) are a Great Combo and will out perform a single HD-7970 even OC'd ... however you'll be locked in with them and have little room to upgrade further, so if your budget down the road permits Dual 7970's well it's hard to beat that right now that's for sure tongue.gif but damn that's a LOT of scratch on graphics cards redface.gif ... then again WILL YOU EVEN NEED TO UPGRADE beyond TWO HD-6970/50's for the next several years ? those cards should run evry game out and coming down the pike for awhile IMO. thumb.gif

I have 2 x unlocked 6950 sapphire cards and they are beasts for the money. They are probably the cheapest setup that will truly let you max out any game. There is no way I would trade this kind of power for the convenience of a single card.

I'd Honestly go for the 2x6950, as far as unlocks go i can speak from experience that my Sapphire 6950 Dirt 3 edition, did not unlock and it seems the chances have worsen a little bit on them unlocking, but the unlock only makes a 3% difference, the 6950's overclock very well! Over all, look at it this way, your getting 2 cards for the price of 1 and the 6950 is a really nice card!
Well here's a little info for you. My buddy has 2 unlocked 6950's overclocked to 1000/1400. I have a new 7970 and ran the same overclock as him. As far as benchmarks go, he's a little faster and said that was the way to go. We ran AvP and I got 103fps vs his 125fps with the same settings. Now in Skyrim, he made a lot of ini edits and high res edits. He is locked at 60fps most of the time, but dips to 45fps in certain areas. I told him I was locked at 60fps no matter what and he didn't believe me. He ended up coming over and loaded the ini file he edited so we were running the same exact settings. He went to the places that he knew dipped to 45fps on his setup and mine was staying locked at 60fps.

He said that's not bad that I'm getting a little more performance for the extra $100 spent. WELL THEN CAME THE REAL TEST. We disabled Vsync and ran the game again. Holly $hit, 100-160fps now in the area's he was seeing 45fps. Now that more than twice the performance of the 2 6950's in a actual game and not benchmark.

It's better to test games that you play vs what benchmarks come up with. If we went by the benchmark #'s then we would have thought that 6950's in Crossfire was faster. Well it's not and by a long way. We fired up Crysis 2 and I can manage the same fps he's getting at 1920x1200 Extreme with Dx11. I'm getting the same fps but at 5760x1080. Here again in a real game the 7970 smokes the 6950's.

I just came from having my 3 480's in surround. My 3 480's would pull a P55k in Vantage and the 7970 only P33k. Skyrim couldn't stay at 60fps with the 480's and couldn't run surround at all. 7970 is 50-60fps at 5760x1080 in skyrim and locked at 60fps in 1920x1080.

Mw3 eyefinity maxed settings is locked at 90fps
Dirt3 eyefinity maxed settings is locked at 60fps and looks amazing.

AMD has done well with the 7900's.

MY POINT is 7970 all the way. Plus my system running 5ghz 2500k and 1000/1500 on the 7970 is pulling 460w total now. 2 6950's will be pulling more than that.

I would not get Dirt3 cards. They are a modified non-ref pcb which means no fullcover waterblock support. That may not mean much to you know, but it will be a turn off when it comes time to sell to potential buyers. Personally 6950 2gb x 2 is faster than a 7950, obviously. But if you are buying from scratch, I might lean towards a new 7950, and again pick one that will have fullcover support. Ek is rolling out a block for the 7950, so this makes its value much higher to the enthusiast.
