It will work but defeat your initial purpose to snyc both fans rotational speed.

PWM fan speed is contolled by pulse hence pulse width modulation. The voltage remains constant at +12V. The speed is by pulse switch.

3-Pin fan speed is controlled by voltage. At +6V the fan speed is 50% of its rated speed, +9V 75% fan speed and so on. If you plug this fan to the Gelid's Y cable above, it will get constant +12V = 100% fan speed.

Solution:

Get a second 4-Pin PWM fan to sync by PWM from CPU fan header.

Or

Go into motherboard BIOS CPU fan settings, select voltage control.

It will not work as you hope.

The main issue is not the cable but the fan.  A cable only does the transmission to and from a fan.  A 3-pin fan lacks an internal PWM circuit/controller and thus it does not have the 4th pin (and 4-pin header).

Without such an internal circuit, the 3-pin fan cannot adjust its speed PWM-wise.

What you need:- the 2nd fan needs to be 4-pin PWM.  It also has to be the same as the 1st 4-pin PWM fan. The 2 fans have to be identical because their fan speed profile has to be same so that both spin at the same speed at the same temp.

So, get another fan identical to the 4-pin PWM fan that you already have.

PWM Y-cable. My first one put up with 500 fan changes and is still going strong: $4 + free shipping:

Sleeved PWM Y-cable

But the 3-fan PWM splitter is $3.95 + shipping, when it's in stock, or here, for $7.95 + shipping.

If I had to settle for $7.95 + shipping, I'd go with a 5-way PWM splitter for $9.99 + shipping.

I have the PWM Y-cable I noted, which is a trooper -- I bought more of them. I also bought the 3-fan and the 5-fan PWM splitters. The 3-way is in my rig. The 5-way is for testing and for future rigs:

The 3-way is unsleeved. The 5-way has handsome sleeving.

Thanks for everyone's input. I decided to go with the Gelid Y cable recommended by windfire. I also picked up another CM Blade Master to complete my Hyper 212+ push/pull.
