Hehe, yeah, that was the plan. Going Surround with ips down the road. But having run Surround before, vram is a big factor and the 480s have only 1.5gb. I might be able to push 3240x1920 but I'm sure quality will have to be toned down. I'm tempted to get a 680 since they don't consume much power compared to the 480s and can run Surround. My insurance only covers a partial percentage of lasik so the rest is up to me. I still have a couple of years before its viable for me to do it so I have to start saving soon.

That's an awesome plan. Kinda of like the dude who won the last motm?

In all honesty, this build is pretty much done.

The Akasa control and the paracord came in. For those who have used paracord, did you remove the white threads inside the sleeve? I would assume when you have cut the paracord to the desired length.

Kinda like the MOTM and L3P and a few others, I'm looking to do my own thing though. I have visions of a permanent cooling installation with potentially a server (ITX/passive cooling setup) and a water-capable test bench all under glass or modular... Right now I'm still working out the details but it'll give me something to do at work and at home the next few months biggrin.gif It's going to be a monster since I want a large work surface at school and it's got to hold my 30" screen on top.

She's supportive of my achievements, but not too thrilled on the expenditures used to get thoere redface.gif. Those integrated system/desk builds are awesome. Lots of work, though I wouldn't have the skill and machinery (let alone more funds) to tackle something like that.

So, the Akasa controller came in and it causes a buzz on all my fans! mad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gifmad.gif

Now gotta contact ppcs.com and I'm sure they won't lift a finger in this matter rolleyes.gif.

Yeah PPCs gets the double thumbs down from me, but they have the widest selection around.. I'm hoping to hit a budget of $200 for the desk materials (assuming I do all my own labor and use the tools available) and I'm budgeting $200 for the cooling loop and server so we'll see what happens. It's a 'need a desk for the fall' project, not a 'I just got a sweet new house' build rolleyes.gif

Also, you mentioned paracord earlier- you will need to strip the core out, (white or brown strands depending on color) and I suggest leaving it at least an inch longer so that it doesn't try to pull out of the heatshrink. I had problems with some of mine slipping because I tried to stretch the paracord the way you would with regular sleeving. As you can probably see, the para won't open up even when you push it together- I really like the tight weave for just that reason.

Only rma they have taken was when they sent me 12" cats instead of 15" cats. They requested a pic to see them. I'm sure this is not their issue but I really would like them to take responsibility at their level and no immediately turn customers to the manufacturer. Going back to the Scythe controller for now until this controller can be sorted.

Sounds like a plan. Those integrated systems are crazy but at the same time you can make a very nice one without a lot of eccentricities. I'll sub for sure mate thumb.gif

I should have plenty of things to keep me busy. I have a friend's laptop that needs repairing and cleaning. I'm also going to try to sleeve my psu with the paracord.

I really do hate the way PPC automatically blames the customer right off the bat, I sent them back some pre-sleeve cables from Mod-Smart, the sleeving fell off the heat shrink and Duke from PPC blamed me right off the bat and started going on a tantrum about it, really pissed me off.. but in the end it all got sorted and their engineers did a half arse job at fixing it and sent it back to me.. I ended up just stripping it all myself and redid the shrink to avoid having to send it back to them..

They have the widest selection I have seen so far, but their CS is really lacking.. Anyhoot !!! let s not turn this into a "I hate PPC" thread.. biggrin.gif

Really like a missus that supports my computer hobby, me and you "wermad" are very lucky in this aspect.. My Missus always say to her friends, "I'd rather my guy spend money on a hobby at home then spend his money on a hobby outside of our home, like other women for example".... lol

and good luck on your surgery, please rest well and perhaps take a break....

Well, that's not for a few years. I learned through my cousin that its not wise to do laser surgery for your eyes when you are in your 20s. All my eye doctors have agreed to wait until you hit your early 30s. My problem progressively worsens over the years but the doctors say it plateaus in your early 30s so that's the best time to have laser corrective surgery on my eyes. I kinda freaked out a bit after looking at my insurance coverage for some new contact lenses I need atm. My insurance will cover a bit of the surgery costs and the rest is up to you. And I don't want a half as job because I didn't have enough money for it. I been through so many builds that its becoming an expensive hobby. Then there's plans for a second child and needing a bigger car eek.gif

My wife is cool with it and she brags to all her friends that I'm the computer man and the crazy things I do with them. She just don't like it when I drop over $2000 in gpu power redface.gif (three 580s 3gb with blocks eek.gif). In the end, family comes first and when they are supportive, you try to do everything you can for them. Including scaling back or giving up your hobby for them smile.gif

Its pretty much done at this point. There's no further updates or changes (biggrin.gif for now). Yeah, seems like everyone in my family comes to me to help with some sort of problem. Family drama rolleyes.gif, sometimes it cramps your style.

mad.gif As expected, ppcs.com wants to me to pay for the shipment of the defective controller. I asked them for a full refund. I'm sure they're going to slap me with the 20% restock fee. I'll go ahead and challenge it through paypal if they do.

edit: I wasn't too happy with ppcs.com and I sent them a piece of my mind. The guy seemed a bit snippy in his reply but they made the exception of covering shipping for me. I never went as far as telling them off when I had to deal with their customer service in the past but this time I just couldn't hold back. I do appreciate what they did for me this time and I won't expect this sort of exception next time. Though I'll go with the bigger stores like newegg and amazon next time I purchase electronics. So kudos to ppcs.com for helping me out thumb.gif

I've decided to simplify the loop. So even though I'm done with this build, there are still little things that can be tweaked here and there. I got the psu since I had some amazon points I could burn off from my card smile.gif
