Just got this phone, the Verizon LTE version. Really liking it so far. First smartphone, upgrading from an LG ev3. Honestly the only reason why I held onto it for so long is for the physical keyboard, but I find myself able to type much faster on the touch screen than I could before.

I'm curious to know what kind of battery life you guys are getting. More specifically, VZW LTE users. Has the (finally) Jelly Bean update given it better/worse battery life?

I had a pretty mediocre battery experience while I had it in my possession. I'm considering giving it a try again if the opportunity presents itself. I'm convinced the extended battery I bought for it might have lost a good portion (anywhere from 15%-30%) of battery health way too soon. The original battery would give me a consistent 10-12 hours from when I had last used it this past summer on a trip to WV. I had a mixed signal experience of 3G and LTE, but 90% 3G or 1X/2G. I also recall signal switching to be pretty rough even after the first initial update that was meant to fix it.

Can't speak for stock, but battery life is great with AOKP JB M1 and Air Kernel. Typically lasts me all day (14-16 hours) with around 30% battery to spare. My school's buildings are also quite cell-hostile and I rarely have signal strength of significance while I'm in class.

This was generally my experience as well.

I'm curious, what do custom ROMs do exactly that improves battery life so immensely? Your situation would have been perfect for me, but I still can't get over the fact they couldn't achieve this stock.

Needless, thanks for the input guys.

The only battery-saving part of AOKP is the addition of tweaks for auto-brightness. It's not 100% working with the kernel I'm using, but it did allow me to adjust brightness settings a bit. The kernel is far more the important player... Based on my experience and my friend's experiments, I'm guessing around 5~10% better efficiency with the right kernel. I'm not sure what the kernels really do for power, but I'm happy knowing I get better performance.

Now, that said, a lot of phones end up benefiting from the lack of bloatware. It's not really an issue with the GNex, but it is for others so many phones tend to see better gains than I did with a custom ROM.

Turn wifi/data off when you're not using it. Push notifications are nice and all, but I can easily get 3-4 days of battery without my phone constantly checking for updates. I charge my phone every other day, and even with the occasional wifi/hspa use it rarely ever drops below 50%.

I am a power user, though, so I need emails constantly pushed. WiFi is also a must, and data when WiFi isn't available. My current RAZR M does all of this and can still net me a good 12 hours on the heaviest day/worst case scenario. On a normal day, though, I end up with at least 20% by the time hit the hay, or if I'm at 50%+, I just leave it be and it will still make it to 5PM the next day, if not longer.
