Visual artifacts with HD 4870x2

Thread Starter
I bought a 4870x2 second hand and put it in my Dell Precision T5400 workstation. About half the time when I boot the computer, I see red (and sometimes green) visual artifacts on the screen. I've seen these before when a card is overheating, but the odd part is I just cleaned the card. When I received it, I noticed it was remarkably loud, so I took off the plastic shroud and noticed an insane amount of dust. One would imagine I wouldn't see artifacts AFTER I cleaned the heatsinks and fan.

Any ideas on what's up? I can probably return it as defective if I need to, but I don't really feel like going through the trouble if it's not.

One extra thought--my PSU has two 6-pin PCI-E power connectors and this card uses a 6-pin and an 8pin. Do the extra two pins make a big difference?

If it indeed were to artifact because of the lack of power transferred to the card (the 6 pins instead of 8 pins) than you could try to underclock the card just a bit using CCC. When you're down there check your temp as well.

You can also check your clockspeeds using GPU-z, perhaps the previous owner did a BIOS flash?

they also sell molex connectors for psu's that dont have enough/ the right connectors, I'm going to go out on a limb and say its because your not getting enough power to your card, if you do successfully get the right connectors for it and it's still doing it, try adjusting voltages to see if you can get rid of the artifacts! thumb.gif

EDIT: heres a link to the molex connectors i was talking about! http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812400034

I thought it was possible the heatsinks were attached too tightly, so I loosened the retention screws. It took longer, but artifacts still appeared and my system crashed. I ordered one of the molex to 8pin adapters--it should be here within a week. Hopefully it will get everything to work.

I tried to adjust fan speed (in case it's just getting too hot) but I can't find anything for fan speed in CCC. I also can't find anything for underclocking/undervolt the card. I checked and it is in low power mode, as the graphics core is only at 500 mhz instead of whatever it's supposed to be.

Normally you'd use AMD Overdrive. You'll find this under the Performance tab in CCC. Alternatively use Atitool.

I tried the card in a friend's computer. His computer has 8-pin PCI-E connectors, unlike mine. It worked flawlessly for at least two hours, so I'm guessing my PC just didn't have sufficient power through the 6-pin connectors. Because it didn't have enough power, the card was either overheating or just freezing under load. I'm upgrading to an 8-pin PCI-E compatible PSU when I can and I'll use a Molex to 8-pin adapter in the meantime.

Thanks for your input, everyone.

My old 4870x2 wouldn't boot with the 6+6 power. It needed 6+8 just to see the BIOS screen.
