Budget Gaming Headphone recommendations.

My last pair of headphones (5 year Plantronic headset that I thought sounded just fine) broke about a year ago and I just recently replaced them with Sennheiser HD 201. The bad part is that I think these headphones sound like utter crap, so I'm thinking about returning them and getting something else. All I care about is gaming performance, and these headphones sound worse than my desktop 2.0 speakers (Harmon Kardon set from Dell). For example, if you've played Arkham City the helicopters will make a woosh woosh sound effect on my speakers, but on my headphones they sound more like a hish hish. Other sound effects just sound very one dimensional and seem to be dominated by the high end or low end. Midrange just sounds bad to me.

Now specifically I play a lot of TF2 and I want to hear the spy cloak/decloak sound and these headphones just don't do it. The cloak sound is supposed to be a "whoosh" sound but again on these headphones it sounds like more a higher pitch "hish" sound which is harder to distinguish when other sounds are happening.

So...

-All I care about is gaming performance. I want headphones that will at least match the quality of my 2.0 speaker setup and give me positional audio so I can tell where people are during online FPS matches.

-Good voice reproduction is also desirable, as I'd like to hear Mumble coms while playing TF2.

-Are there any headphones better than the HD 201s for under $20, as I did only pay less than $20 for the set.

-Are the JVC RX700s still the ultimate gaming headphones to get around $30? Do you guys have any other recommendations for headphones under $30 that are still better than the HD 201s?

-I might be willing to spend as much as $45. What are some gaming headphone options for that price and under? And how big of a difference would the sound quality be over the cheaper sets?

-I live in the US. Will use Amazon or Newegg or a local Best Buy.

-Don't plan on getting an amp. I already have a mic.

HA-RX 700's are good. I had a pair and they are better than the hd 201's, which i also had before it.

The samson sr850's are good headphones for the same price too, but are bright and fatiguing. They sound better than the jvc's though if you find you aren't bothered by that.

Honestly I don't like the HD 201s at all. Audio just does not sound accurate. Something is off. Only thing that comes through clear and accurate are people's voices, but everything else is just blah. So would you say the RX 700s completely blow the HD 201s out of the water? Because the more I listen to the 201s the more I hate them.

What do you mean when you say the sr850s are bright? The most recommended thread also says the SH600s are better for gaming than the sr850s.

I have the RH600 and let me tell you they have no bass. I guess that's also why it sounds like my head is inside a bucket. I had to adjust the equalizer on my xonar quite a bit to get it to what I like. Also I have a big head so they are uncomfortable for me. They do sound good for gaming though.

Can't go wrong wtih harx700 unless your a competitive FPS palyer, They are not Battlefield 3 gaming headphones with awesome position cue. But for everything else they should do fine. If you want competitive gaming headphones for FPS that give good positional cues AD700 are to go.Way out of your price range though.

You can go upper into other gaming headsets with the mic but they dont offer nice sound quality and often dont justify the price.

Usually headphones with bright and very big sound stage are going to be good for FPS gaming. That is why ad700 is recommended so much. The samson sr850s are often reference as the cheaper alternative to ad700's havent heard them myself but they should be a great buy if your willing to stretch the budget a bit.
