Question on upgrade.

Thread Starter
I already sold my computer, so I have to get something as this point. I was planning to go with an i7 3820 and motherboard, but the more I think about it, the more I believe it will be overkill for a gaming rig. I don't want to go with a 2500k or 2600k this close to Ivy bridge being released. I was thinking that I could go with a Z68 Gen3 motherboard and a cheap 1155 CPU to get my rig up and going again until Ivy bridge is released? Or should I continue with my X79 build?

Thanks

You sholdn't buy a Z68 board if you really plan on using IVY. Wait for the new chipsets for IVY. You can use a z68/gen3 but why not wait. It's only 2 months away. Get a Z77 board. If you want to get a z68, you may as well just settle for a 2500k then.

Yea, I think you would be better off getting one of the Z77's unless you just really didn't want to wait.

I may just build a small HTPC to use until Z77 and Ivy.

Heck Haswell is comin in 2013 and its a new socket and everything. I was gonna buy Ivy but now that Haswell is coming out in 2013 i figure no ivy and just wait til Haswell then get a whole upgrade for the mobo and what not in 2013. personally just go for sandy. no point waitin for ivy when Haswell is 6 months away and it needs new socket. I just bought intel Ocing insurance if i want a new sandy chip and a ticket to the silicon lottery tongue.gif

I am thinking Haswell will be more like 12 months after Ivy. Who knows, I might go Piledriver. wink.gif
