Looking for advice on quieting down my new WC rig

Thread Starter
I finally have my first water cooled system up and running (thanks to everybody here!) and I love it. My only complaint is that it isn't drastically quieter. I didn't really expect it to be, since I only took away the stock CPU fan, but I was wondering what my option weres when it comes to taking away or slowing down my case fans.

Current setup: Single Loop

D5/Fusion Bay Res Combo
EK Supreme HF Block
Black Ice SR1 Rad (Low Flow)
Antec 902 Case (with huge top fan)
3x Scythe Slipstream 1200 RPM Fans
- Two Front Intake
- One Exhaust Across Rad

I'm not looking at clocking to 4GHz permanently or anything (I've left my 1090T at 3.4), and I only have a single 5770 GPU. Temps range from 21 to 29 C right now.

Where do you guys think I could shave away some noise? I haven't tried using the mobo to slow fan speeds, which I might try.

The D5 is silent.
You could get Gentle Typhoon AP-15 fans.
Your GPU is probably the loudest thing n your case. Watercool your GPU.
That rad is low flow so reduce the speed of your fans.

Your first problem here is "D5/Fusion Bay Res Combo" , I recommend you to lower the d5 pump speed if you insist to use that pump/res combo because its very noisy. feels like the bay amplify the pump noise and also cause vibration to the case.

What I'm currently using/suggest put the pump on the very bottom of your case, get a typical cylinder reservoir. which will elminate a good chunk of the noise your hearing. If you still have some funds then buy a fan controller and undervolt your fans. Make sure the fan controller is able to handle watts generated by fans. I'm currently using a lamptron fc5v2 which puts out 30watt per a channel

There's a rule, the idea is... your system will be as loud as ur loudest part u have installed...

I WCed for the looks but tried to make it quieter as well, by coincedence i have the Lamptron fc5v2, and in my case I undervolted fans, pump (out of experimentation's sake) etc etc and in the end my PSU fan was making all the noise...

So if I were u i'd try to disable all the fans just to check what is making the noise and then go about changing stuff, ur goal should be to 'localize' what is making most of the noise in your pc, u'll see what im talking about, ie. the rule...

So you should know in the end u'd have to make some alterations to all the noise making components ie. make it quiet such as getting quieter psu, fan controller as suggested, etc

So true!
At idle/light use, my 9x Akasa Viper fans and 2x MCP35x pumps run at their minimum 0% PWM speed.
I can't hear them running at those speeds, but my two 10k RPM Velociraptor hard drives are friggin annoying! frown.gif

With out any kind of description of what kind or where the noise is coming form its kind of hard to say but as other have said, slowing down the pump is a good place to start. Also are we talking load or idle noise levels?

The D5 isn't an issue, I had to touch it to make sure it was actually on. I think it's the combination of all of the fans just making an overall "hum". I have most of my extra PSU cabling just stuffed in the bottom drive bay, so I'll probably just turn off that fan since the airflow is probably pretty poor. Can I turn down the voltage of the case fans if I plug them into the motherboard or do I need a fan controller?

Depends on the motherboard but honestly fan controllers are so cheap that I would just get one and be done with it. Even 1 Zalman Fan Mate and some 3-pin splitters will do the job.
