Would this work? (eyefinity)

Thread Starter
I intend to buy a Dell Ultrasharp U3011 sometime during the next few months... Now, I was intending to run a multimonitor/eyefinity setup, but at the same time I want the high resolution of the U3011 (the pixel pitch along with a few other things put me off of the U2711, the U3011 seems perfect)... So I was thinking, perhaps I could get a Dell Ultrasharp U3011 and put two HP LP2065 monitors on their sides next to it. Those 20" 1600x1200 monitors have almost the same pixel pitch as the U3011 30" 2560x1600, all three are IPS panels with, from what I can see, similar response time and input lag (the HP LP2065's are probably somewhat faster)... so that should match well and thanks to the IPS technology should work well at greater angles. (And three U3011's is just too expensive tongue.gif)

This would however result in a somewhat unusual resolution of 4960x1600... Can you do that resolution in eyefinity? Will games handle it well? Are there other (obvious or less obvious) things I am for some reason forgetting?

HP LP2065's seem to be selling for 50-60 euros (used but in good shape) quite regularly over here (the Netherlands) and I was thinking they would be perfect for this. I generally play strategy games and RPG's, with the occasional shooter and racing game thrown in (and soccer management games) so it's not like Im looking for the perfect FPS or MMORPG set-up... But I was looking to replace my ancient 19" professional color CRT... and I want to do it right. And of course I imagine that the extra screens can also come in handy for work and other activities. But I have no experience with eyefinity at all so I would like to hear thoughts and recommendations.

Oh, by the way, I do realize that my current videocard won't do it (it would already be pushing its outer limits with just the U3011) but that's next on my list of replacements, once these 7950s or 7970s get a bit cheaper or maybe if I can get a good deal on a used pair of 6970s I will go for that... I built another computer for my girlfriend that also uses a 6870 just so I could move my videocard into her's once I would replace it)... smile.gif

Thanks in advance!!! smile.gif

Eyefinity doesn't support portrait-landscape-portrait setups. They all have to have the same orientation, and it takes the lowest resolution among all of your displays, so all three would run at 1600x1200. There was hope that AMD would add support for it in "Eyefinity 2.0", but they didn't frown.gif

You could look at SoftTH, but it only supports up to DirectX 9 in games. I think would work in a desktop environment so you could just use the 30" alone in games that SoftTH doesn't support and use all 3 for desktop/productivity. I haven't used it personally though.
