[EXPIRED] [Amazon] Velociraptor 600GB (Latest model in retail packaging) - $209.99

I happened to come across this by accident today. I have no idea how long this deal has been going on or how long it will last.

These look like the best deal on a Velociraptor drive, if you want one. They're still expensive, but better than any other place I can find online by at least $50, and the best $$/GB of any Velociraptor drive. However, it is still about triple the $$/GB of a WD 2TB Black, even with today's inflated prices.

Sold through J & R Music World with free shipping.

http://www.amazon.com/Western-Digital-VelociRaptor-Retail-Desktop/dp/B0047QR8WQ

EDIT: Price has gone up to $229.99.

stuff like these arent really worth it unless you really need all that space and dont like the speed of regular hard drives but at the same time dont have the money for full SSDs.

pretty narrow market if you ask me

but these are good WOW factors thumb.gif

For the cost of this drive, $210, you can get a 120gb SSD and have money for a storage drive.

This could be used as a fast storage drive WITH an SSD thumb.gif

I guess the previous option would have been to raid WD Blacks, but due to the current HDD shortage this deal isn't all that bad.

this would have been a good deal 2 years go. SSD is the future, not 10k disc drives.

lol wat? 120gig storage vs a 600gig?

im just saying if you really need all that room. steam games or huge amateur movie production or even a server. (original purpose of 10k drives)

120gig ssd is like 150-160 to your door for a decent one like a M4. leaving you $60-70 for a regular hard drive? with the inflated hard drive market that gets you 320-500GBs

It's actually an alright deal depending on what you need it for. I feel that SSDs are finally maturing and are worth jumping on, but depending on your uses this might be an okay way to go.

If you have between 150-550GB of Steam games (not more, not less) then it's worth considering. If you play MMOs or mod heavy games (Oblivion), then go for the SSD. If you primarily play other games, then the Raptor will probably be fine. These things do have 6-7ms seeks and ~140MB/sec sequential speeds, so they will be fast. They put most storage drives to shame.

Keep in mind that some games benefit from a faster drive, but don't benefit much from super low access times. (League of Legends is one; 5 second difference between my SSD and 2TB Hitachi for loadtimes... although, my 2TB Hitachi does peak at 155MB/sec...) If you experience minor hitching in games, a Velociraptor will probably fix it. But if you experience major hitching (such as a mod-heavy Oblivion install), then definitely go for an SSD.
