Weird issue with Crossfire, ideas?

Hey guys,

I have 2 Sapphire Radeon 5870 Vapor X cards. I just got my second one from a really cool dude here yesterday. Here is my issue.

At first I just popped the second card in and booted the machine up, went into the Catalyst Control Center and was looking for the enable xfire check box, could not find it anywhere. Within a couple minutes of me being online the screen gets all garbled and system freezes, so I reboot. After this reboot on the mobo I get a solid red light above the video card and no post.

I them reset the cmos, take one card out and keep a single card in, the machine boots fine into windows. So I am thinking at this point driver maybe? I run Driver Sweeper, redownload and install the CCC. Shut the machine down and install the second card again hoping it will boot.

At this point the system posts, but once the splash screen for windows comes up the system just freezes and cannot get to the login screen via Windows.

Anyone have any idea *** is going on? I know that some of this maybe exclusive to my hardware but I am curious to see if anyone has had similar issues with crossfire?

Thanks for any help or advice you can provide.

try switching the order of the cards. i would guess it might be a PSU issue, but i ran 2 5870s on my TX750 just fine.......

In addition I did try both cards as singles and both do work in a single configuration.

I gotta be honest, it sounds more like a hardware issue than anything else. The same thing happens with my system when i try plugging in my bricked 6770.

Could also be something wrong with your 2nd PCI-E slot

Thanks for the response. It's funny you mention that I was talking with a collegue and he suggested that I do the same on switching the order of the cards. I was also thinking power supply, I know I need a new one soon especially with xfire.

I was thinking the same. I plan on trying to boot a single card from the second slot tonight to see if it is the mobo. This is just frustrating given how easy this should be... I guess that is the hobby we are in...

Nemesis you were 100% correct. Looks like I just needed to flip the cards. It's working now and DXdiag is reporting 17xxmb of ram so I know it's seeing both cards. Having some strange CCC issues at the moment but about to reload that and I am hoping that takes care of that. + rep for all for helping thanks a million.
