OG Droid Upgrade?

Thread Starter
My power button finally got stuck in. I can use it to turn the phone on and off, but being in college, and not having access to just drive to the nearest store and get a new phone worries me a bit. I went to the Verizon website to look at their selection, and noticed the Droid 4 literally just came out. I was going to get a Droid 3 until I saw that.

I really want a phone with a keyboard. I know what people say, but the ease I get from being able to text with a keyboard is worth it for me to not get the Gnex (plus it's a little too big for my liking).

Could I get some recommendations on some solid phones that would be a worthy successor to the OG Droid? With a QWERTY slider.

If it has to have a QWERTY slider, DROID 4 just came out and is a RAZR with a keyboard. Best bet hands down.

But plug for the Nexus too, it's a Google device and has an unlocked bootloader. Or the Rezound. Unlockable bootloader + friggin gorgeous screen + epic hardware + massive amounts of storage.

Droid 3 was mediocre at best.

Why PM you? We have a thread right here where everyone can benefit from your answers.

The droid 4 has the best qwerty keyboard out at the moment. It's screen is pretty lackluster and there aren't significant improvements over the droid 3. It's a decent refresh, but it's no longer the android powerhouse that the OG Droid was.

If I don't have a problem with the OG Droid screen, will I have a problem with the screen on the D4? It appears to be the same hardware, minus the size and resolution differences. I don't do a ton of visual work with my phone, maybe an occasional video or part of a movie, but usually never in sunlight. I keep the brightness all the way down on my OG Droid, to save battery, and other than bright sunlight, I don't have problems with it.

About the bootloader, won't someone over at XDA just hack one up like they did with the OG Droid, and many of the other Android devices out?

Bootloader question: Yep, its only a matter of time. If you dont mind waiting it out. I had a fine time messing with my EVO3D on stock rom/kernal. Now its like I've got a new toy, yay.

OG Droid has a great screen for its time. D3, Bionic, D2 screens have problems displaying green...its a pentile. RAZR is a little but not as bad. I've used it and its weird at first but you get used to it. I wouldn't let that change your buying decision.

OG Droid had an unlockable bootloader from the get-go. It was technically a developer device (like the Moto Xoom), first device with Android 2.0. No devices anymore have that besides nexus ones. Samsung is relatively easy to crowbar your way into and bust it open. Moto devices since the DX have been locked up tight, there's roundabout ways of doing it but it's not a true bootloader hack, just a bootstrap. It gives custom ROMs but makes it hard for devs to create them. HTC has them locked up very tight too, but offers an unlocker tool that voids yoiur warranty, but doesn't give a full bootloader unlock, just gives you the ability to flash.

I belive the only Motorola device to be cracked wide open was the Atrix, and that was only by chance via a leaked document.

Just looked up the Rezound, and I must say, I would love a 720p screen on a phone, but I also value function over form. I don't tend to do a lot of visually intensive things on my phone, and I would hate to support a Beats audio product. That keyboard is really a deal breaker for me. I guess I'll just have to try them out in store in person. Can anyone attest to the weight and build quality of the D4 compared to the D1, or in general for that matter?

I sell phones part time and VZW is a carrier that we provide. I personally like the keyboard on the the new D4. The OG Droid keyboard was terrible for the fact you couldnt distinguish the keys. It was flat, mushy, rubber with no key spacing. The new D4 keyboard has better key spacing, and in my opinion better feedback. The D4 is really your only option (and a good one) on VZW if you want a QWERTY keyboard smartphone. Also there is the new Bold 9900 series that IMO still has the best QWERTY keyboard of any phone. If android is your platform of choice the D4 would be great.

The Beats Audio can be easily disabled if you don't like it, but from what I've heard it's actually pretty good. It's not only software but it's got a higher end sound controller too.

I bought my D1 for the keyboard and never used it. I now own a Dinc2 and don't miss the keyboard at all.
