Whats wrong with my internet?!

Thread Starter
Ok I have a problem, and it's extremely strange. I can't figure it out!

I have a four-port router in my main computer room, serving three computers directly. Another (home-made) wire runs through the attic into my bedroom, serving two other computers hooked up to a 5-port switch. The two computers in my bedroom keep randomly losing network connectivity. They see eachother, but not the rest of the network (In the computer room)

Now, heres comes the stange part, and this is most likely going to ruin your ideas of what is wrong:

When i connect the main cable directly into one computer, the problem stops. The internet never dies, and works flawlessly. Now, you're thinking, then it's the switch. Well, think again! Two switches and one hub ALL had the same problem. I absolutely cannot figure this out.

My network specs:

Router- DLink GamersLounge 10/100/1000 Model DGL-4100
Switch 1- Netgear 5-port 10/100 switch, Model FS605 v2
Switch 2- Linksys 5-port 10/100 switch, Model EZXS55W
Hub- Netgear 4-port hub, Model EN104TP

Thanks!

Try putting new connectors on both ends of the cable that "runs through the attic." Sometimes if the wires get pulled out just a little bit, you can get fun problems like that.

Just a guess.. But is the "uplink" port involved? If so then the port adjacent should be left empty.

Most newer routers/switches don't have 1 uplink port or switch.... Many are auto-detect... I think that started to happen (on a grand scale) 2-3 years back.

I must have an outdated switch, as it has the "uplink". I had a similar issue, maybe time to get a newer model...

We're talking buying cablea nd plugs, aligning and crimping.

I found the problem with the origional wire: the stirped green was where the stirped blue was supposed to be (and vise versa)

Now, the activity LED blinks like mad when I plug in the cord... i dont know whats going on...
