They are not necessarily "leaving" the cpu war. They are simply not going to try and keep up with intel and follow in their footsteps. Instead they are going to take a step back and rethink a new strategy and that is to innovate and be successful with APU's and cpu's as well. Their latest product roadmaps did not shown any sign of them getting out of the cpu market. They have many cpu's and apu's due to release this year.

In my view, AMD might try to gain flavor to Apple products. Apple has already taken their GPU into account but still use Intel CPU.
APU would be a perfect component for notebooks if it is powerful enough to extend battery life and performances.

As pretty much they want to push off Intel CPU with Integrated HD graphic with APU + Discreet GPU which will be the best combination if done right.

This is why I said they left the war, means no war but just not competing with Intel in desktop market at all.
