Too bad, considering AMD's graphics department is really the only thing keeping them afloat right now, the only reason anyone cares about the APU's is because the graphics are good.
The man they just fired(quit his job?) is the same guy who took them from the hellhole money throwaway that was the AMD/ATI merger and the resulting disaster that was the 2900 series, to where they are now.. Dominating the market.

Very sad to see.

Very bad move IMO.

Not really. The APUs keep simplicity to a minimum, so they sell well. The high end GPU market is a niche, doesn't represent an overly significant proportion of AMD's income.

The HD2900 series wasn't too bad, they were just way too hot. But they performed pretty decent!

They were like nVIDIA's Fermi.

Their GPU strategy hasn't changed -- they are still pursuing high performance discrete graphics. The reason is there is a trickle down effect, they use that tech for their APU's and cpu offerings, it is vital that they stay on top of the game in graphics. Their CPU strategy is different now, they're pursuing mobile/ultrabook/etc and they can really do damage there, their APUs have much better graphics performance and cost than intel offerings.

I don't want to read into this news too much, none of us know the inner workings of AMD.

I had the pleasure of working with Eric when I was running the VR Labs and Engineering Reality Center at SGI. AMD has lost a brilliant person. That said, there are plenty of bright and talented people at AMD and Eric leaving will not hurt the company at all. Most companies make sure that no one individual holds enough knowledge, expertise or control that would hurt the company if they left.

They were like nVIDIA's Fermi.

Sandy/ivy bridge is just as simple though, the only real difference is their graphics suck, which puts AMD ahead

And the 2900s were bad man. Real bad. They came out several months after nvidia released the 8800gtx/ultra, cost the same, but only performed about as well as the 8800gts'es, i had an x1800 at the time and was looking forward to them so bad, trust me i remember.

But yeah no seriously. This new ceo is definitely looking as though he's going to make AMD profitable again, i just dont like the way hes doing it. Everything is going low power/mobile and it sucks. I just want the real FX series back.

pretty sure AMD wont back out of the gpu market.
I hope they get a new guy that knows how to push their driver team to actually make good drivers for their cards. I'm not saying their drivers are bad, but they aren't showing the potential these cards are suppose to be making. They need to develop algirthms that make use of the shaders that aren't being used or whatever the problem is.

It sucks that he left though. You tend to want to keep your experts.

Awesome think tank at AMD, get rid of people who know their stuff and one of the main people who's division is the only reason you're making cash........Maybe they're trying to tank their business so uncle Sam is forced to step in and stop the monopoly that Intel has basically...... mad.gif

I don't support terribly run business, and even though their the under dog, this might be the last ATI gpu I own if Kepler proves to be the real deal. I just don't see how they could let him go and not throw money bags at him or why they would want him gone. Meh anyways, they better continue their price performance lead in the areas they still have and continue to wow OEMs with they APU's if not they'll be in big trouble.
