Case Vibration - Solved

Thread Starter
I picked up a transient high-frequency vibration in my new Arc Mini build...and it was maddening. It was one of those vibrations that would go away if you touched the case, but then it would come back later...and the frequency was grating.

It was clearly the case vibrating, but I couldn't determine what was causing it...so I disconnected components in turn, and finally hunted it down. It turned out to be one of my two data HDDs - a 1TB Samsung Spinpoint. It was vibrating enough to serve as a foot massager. The other data drive, a 2TB WD Caviar Green, is nearly vibration free.

The Arc has silicone grommets for the drives, but there is no way that they could isolate this magnitude of vibrations. I would have had to suspend it with rubber bands. Instead, I pulled the drive and now life is good.

Dang, I was trying not to buy new drives for this build given current prices. I just wish that I could have got a second WD Caviar Green when BestBuy had them on sale in November for 79 beans, but they sold out fast. I guess that I'll swap in something smaller for now. It' not the primary data drive.

Anyway, I thought that I would post in case anyone else has similar issues. It's not always the case fans. smile.gif

cheers,
Scuba
