What's better than two GTX 480 in SLI? - Page 3

Single 7970. Should o/c easily to 1125. At that point it will be faster than sli 480s with more ram to boot.

Wow 2 GTX480's SLI are a monster thumb.gif nice you have it and pls think carefully when you're upgrading them since their performance is great thumb.gif but ofcourse when comes down to efficiency (billing) a single card is better then dual cards.

The 590 is pretty silent thanks to its axial fan design rather than the radial fan design.
http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph4239/36080.png

On auto fan, it will not go above 50% ingames and the GPUs will be somewehre around 86°C.

I pumped my fan up to 70% with custom fan profile (which should still be WAY quieter than a single GTX 480) and GPUs are around 76°C which is a pretty good temp.
I imagine your 480s on stock fans run at about 90 degrees if not more.

Also, heres a noise comparison between the 590 and the 6990: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjUGrJfpGuE
Youll see how silent the card is.

As for performance, you wont see a gain. Stock for stock, the 590 should be dead even with two 480s.

In terms of raw FPS, no single GPU is going to be 'faster' than 2 480's in SLI. Even a 590 (all games) or 6990 (many games) would on average be a little slower, actually.

However, when it comes to max playable settings, a 7970 or 680 is going to very comparable. The reason being is that lower FPS is smoother on a single card than it is on a SLI setup. 30fps on one card 'feels' more like 45fps in SLI, 40fps on one card plays very much like 60fps in SLI, and so on.

So while your benchmark/raw fps numbers would certainly dip, in terms of the gameplay experience, I doubt you'll actually 'notice' too much difference in terms of the maximum settings you can get away with running if you went with one of the flagship current generation cards.

Cool thanks,

Have you guys seen any benchmark like 480 SLI versus 680 SLI? Can't seem to find those!

Just look at 570 SLI benchmarks, 480 SLI performs about the same.

No. The closest single GPU I think is the 580 since it is just essentially a 480 with all CUDA cores unlocked.

Personally, after running SLI & CF for quite a while, I don't see having a need for more than one gpu for many reasons, especially at only 1080P. #1 micro-stuttering, very noticeble when you've been gaming competitively for over 5 years now. #2 power efficiency, negligible in the case of the new GCN arc, but still. #3 driver issues, nuff said.

This is why I'm "downgrading" to a GTX680 as soon as they are back in stock. Should net higher FPS in single card situations, and allow me to SAVE A TON of power due to the fact that the only reason I still have my 2nd card is for the 3rd monitor I run.

Do what i did, grab a pair of Antec 620's slap them on and enjoy the silence and performance.
