The curious case of my Mobo's top PCI slot (ASrock extreme 3)

Thread Starter
After much trial and tribulation, I discovered that my top PCI-E x1 slot simply refuses to recognize my Titatanium HD soundcard. It lights up when the computer starts and everything, but will not produce sound nor show up in device manager. However, the card works just find in the other PCI slot. This would not be a problem except for the small matter that using the second PCI-E x 1 slot will prevent me from every using a crossfire configuration.

I looked in the BIOS and did not see anything that jumped out at me that might fix this issue. Any thoughts gentlemen?

(Bonus Question: Is a weight lifter for the new beefy videocards really necessary? Can't use the one that came with my 7970 as a result of having to rearrange things around the non-working PCI-E x1 slot.)

Edit: If the ASRock z68 thread is a better place for this, just let me know and I will delete this thread and move the discussion there.

Your case of the PCI-e 1x slot is a tough one, but I can answer your bonus one with less difficulty.

The answer is this: No. Unless you see your card sagging at the back so much that it worries you. But, in reality, no they aren't needed.

I'm using an extreme4 gen3 p67 and my titanium HD is working fine in top pcie slot. i have issues with my sound sometimes not working after switching back and forth from game mode to entertainment mode, does it do this after restarting your pc? have you tried re-installing creative drivers?

Installing the creative drivers when it is in the top slot does nothing unfortunately- the auto-updater fails to detect the presence of any creative products on the computer. I have never managed to have it detect the soundcard in the top slot (or through the creative software) in any of my restarts or attempts. Everything works just fine on the second slot though and has never had any trouble when restarting or switching modes.

I understand.

I'm looking at your board layout now and I totally understand, the other 1x slot is going to be under a gpu and not usable. Have you tried to contact asrock for an rma?

Solution 1:
Try another PCIe x1 card to see if it is recognized in the top slot, this could rule out a motherboard issue, or prove it is a motherboard issue and RMA is required.

Solution 2:
When you first installed the card, was it in the other PCIe slot? This is a guess, but maybe you will need to put the card in the slot where it is recognized, completely remove the device through device manager and delete all traces of drivers, uninstall Creative extras. Then power down, unplug from wall, switch card to top slot and try again. You could also look for a bootable Windows XP disc and boot off that to see if it can recognize the card in the top slot, this could point to a software problem/Windows installation problem.

I've contacted ASRock to see if they have any solutions. I am still within my first 30 days of purchase so it looks like I might soon become intimately familiar with the NewEgg RMA process (only heard good things luckily.)

Unfortunately I do not have any other PCI- x1 cards to check with =/. I installed the soundcard to the top slot to start with so I don't think it is a driver cleanup issue. Looks like I may have an RMA in my future. Just bad luck that the one part that needs fixing is the one that involves rebuilding the whole computer I suppose!

Push for ASRock for an RMA before Newegg, you can probably get them to throw in some freebies as well, stickers, pens, hat, etc.
