Coil whine on new psu

Hello friends.

Going through the process of building the computer in my sig, I ended up killing my psu, cpu, mobo, and ram through a course of events. I already placed the rma order for the psu, and ram from corsair, they accepted and they are happily on their way. In the meantime I found it was as good a time as ever to finally get a really beefy psu, as I intend to run two flagship of the next gen that nvidia comes out with and then a gtx 570hd from evga as the dedicated physx. So after reading through many reviews and liking the price, I decided to purchase the sparkle 1kw. The only draw back that seemed to come from this psu was the 18a per rail, and the ominous coil whine. Now, that being said I have owned 5 psus in my life not including oem in prebuilts. So, I have never actually ever heard coil whine before. I figured it can not be that bad. Well, a few days into a complete build, I get everything stable and running the way I like it, I decide to start folding, and with it I started to hear a very loud high pitched noise.

Checking all the parts of my computer with a very close ear, I realize that it was coming from the psu. I then stop folding, it stops, I load up three different games and still it is no longer having the loud noise. So I have come to these questions. If anyone has any answer please do share as this is something I've never come across.

1. Is this an issue that shows that later on down the line, will cause more problems?
2. Is there anything I can do to stop the noise without voiding warranty?
3. If I were to return this to store to get a different brand, what is the likely hood of running into this issue again. I've been reading through reviews and am finding that the nzxt 82 850w is made by seasonic, and will have no issues with running at least two 300w gpus, and the rest of the system, or go with a brand that I have known to work well for me tx850m or hx1050, or go for the wild card and give the cooler master 800 silent pro a try? All 4 seems to be great psu from the reviews I have read so far, I'm just looking for some opinion from people with more experience.

Thanks

edit: there are also these being sold locally.

I talked to this guy via text a few days ago, he says he has the receipt from orignal purchase so he can verify its age.

and this just popped up

which are also both viable options

Not so much a issue, but can be a bit annoying. if its really loud I suppose you can rma it, but its very possible to get another psu with a bit of whine, might be better might be worse.

That what I figured. I buy everything locally or from microcenter, and their return policy is amazing, and on top of that they have an in store replacement plan. Im really leaning towards paying $105 for that tx850m though. As long as the guy can verify it is as new as he says it is, its a steal imo.

Scratch that, its not the m model, and for my current set up having a none modular is not an option.

Thanks for responding though

I went with the nzxt hale 82 850w.

Coil whine is gone. Packaging and wires were a bit less impressive than the sparkle, but getting this nzxt put 85$ back in the bank and rid me of my coil whine problem. biggrin.gif
