Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z, opinions?

Thread Starter
Had a look at a few reviews and through a few threads on OCN and really like the look of this mobo. Just a couple of things I would like to know before I buy.

1/ I presume crossfire (6970) would only be possible with water cooling?
2/ do the mosfets hold up well with overclocking? (I'm looking for a 4.8ghz+ with a 2500k/2600k)
3/ Am I loosing anything by going micro atx rather than full atx?
4/ general opinions and recommendations please.

Cheers, Pyra.

1. Well I'm not sure why you'd think that. Two 6970's should work fine out of the box as far as I can tell. I mean, the top card is probably gonna run a bit hotter because it'll be cramped, but they'll work

2. It's an ROG board. The ROG series is basically a performance series geared towards overclocking, so I'm sure it'll take it in stride.

3. The only thing you'd be losing out on by going Micro ATX is expansion slots. For the Gene-Z in particular, you only get two PCIe x16 and one PCIe x4 slots. So you wouldn't be able to use, say, any PCI devices such as a PCI wireless adapter.

4. Well, I generally don't buy Micro ATX boards for myself, just because I like the idea of always having extra expansion slots. Also I have a Full Tower case and a tiny Micro ATX mobo would just look silly in it I think. However, I do have a buddy that bought the Gene-Z and he absolutely loves it. It's one of the highest rated mobos on Newegg right now, so I think that speaks for itself.

if you like it then buy it, its an awsome board and well reviewed. for a mATX mobo i dont think you could do better and IIRC this is a great board for xfire especially being and mATX and should run two cards at x8 x8 thumb.gif

Cheers, Pyra.

1/ negative there are many users in the club without watercooling here-->http://www.overclock.net/t/1004219/official-asus-rog-maximus-iv-gene-z68-z68-gen3-owners-club
2/ im at 4.8 with 1.5 volts for vcore and yes they hold up well biggrin.gif
3/ Maybe a couple pci-e slots
4/ I LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEEEEE MY BOARD!!!!!
And ive had a p67-ud-5 z-68 ud-5 and a asrock board
post #5 of 6
I just got mine. I switched from a full size asrock board. The Gene has all the features you could want, very powerful as well. OCs a lot better than any other board I have used.

I think it is easily one of the better boards in the price range, u.less of course you need more Sata or expansion slots
Good luck!

Thanks all and +rep.

I've always been of the opinion that bigger is better (no sniggering please) and have never owned a micro atx mobo but, all the reviews I have read and your opinions have put my mind at ease.
