Back up problem SSD related

Thread Starter
I linked most of my C/users to my E drive. When windows does a back up i get these errors.

Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\Rod\Music. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))
Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\Rod\Pictures. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))
Backup encountered a problem while backing up file C:\Users\Rod\Videos. Error:(The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002))
Windows Backup skipped F:\Users\Rod\Saved Games because it cannot be found on drive F:\.
Windows Backup skipped F:\Users\Rod\Searches because it cannot be found on drive F:\.

It use to have an F drive but now it is E since the SSD was installed. My music/pictures and video is linked from C/users to my E drive.
The music, pictures etc are on drive E. So how can I correct these errors? Also since drive F does not exist how can I correct those errors?
Any info you need I'll try to answer. Any suggestions, please do. I still have not transferred all of my files from the external backup and don't think I will until I get this sorted out.

Thanks

You need to go into windows backup, and define a new backup set. Choose the "custom" option, and there you can select what to backup/exclude. It sounds like you are just running from an old backup that was defined with your old drive F:\ installed, and the user files still on your C:\ drive. It is likely in this senario that the folders you relocated to your E:\ drive (Pictures, Music, Video, Saved Games, Searches) are not actually being backed up with the current backup settings.

Thanks I think you are correct. Only the C Drive was being backed up. I'll assume the error messages will go away after it completes an error free back up? I changed the settings to backup the C & E Drive to my external drive K. That is where my backups are. I need to do some clean up on that drive as well. I scheduled it to run in a few minutes. If its error free, great if not I'll post the results.
Thanks

oops, I accidentally turned off the feature that shows errors on a backup. How do I turn that back on? The back up is running now so I'll have to turn it on later if someone can tell me how to do that.

Thanks again - user mental error LOL

To turn on messages about windows back-up, go to the Windows 7 Action Center, click the dropdown arrow next to maintenance.

If you have previously turned off messages for back-up, click the blue "link" to "Turn On messages about windows backup".

Thanks, that was easy. I got the same error messages. It still does not know C/users is linked to drive E. It did not complete successfully and my files were not backed up.
The same errors for drive F, it can't find the files so they were skipped. Of course there is no drive F so the files don't exist.
A registry edit might be a cure for the F drive, I have no clue.
What does everyone else do that links there C/users to another hard drive?

Out of curiosity, when you put your user files on the E:\ drive... Did you use the windows "properties menu", and relocate them using the "location" tab?

This should have actually moved the files, rather than creating a link.

Regarding the F:\ drive, when you redefined the back-up, did the F:\ drive show up in the folder list of "What to back-up"?

Yes, properties/location, then move. Perhaps my terminology is incorrect when I say linked but when I open them in C it shows the location as E.
I didn't see a custom option on backup. However it showed my three drives. C - E and backup drive K. The E drive was unchecked so I checked it. No F drive was shown.
I had an issue with Steam as well getting it to work. I googled and found an answer. It was also related to F and a registry edit was the cure.
At this point the F errors are not a big concern, it skipped them ( but I do want them fixed). It appears the C/users error is the real problem since files were not backed up.

I suspect that what is happening, should have thought of it before... You have an "old" back-up set on the removeable drive K:\, that contains back-up information from your (now removed) F:\ drive. You may have also "moved" files from the C:\ drive to the E:\ drive, but at one point created a backup set before the move?

Is this possible? The reason I ask, Windows backup appends what is already there, meaning it is compares the backup set (on K:\), and attempts to look at changes to the files to append the back up.

So, the backup set (on K:\), has a reference to F:\ (and backed up files), and the error is produced because F:\ no longer exists. the same thing is probably happening with C:\ if you relocated the directories after creating the first backup. Although I no longer use windows back-up, this is the way it used to work for me when I used to back-up to DVD-RW discs.

If this is the case with you, you'll need to first delete the existing backup set from your K:\ drive. After you start windows backup, select the option to create a NEW, full backup. Define it, and the errors should go away. For some reason in the back of my head, I don't think you are offered the option to create a new, full backup, if you have an existing backup on the destination drive.

My thoughts are similar to yours but I lacked how to define it. Yes there is old back-up sets, two full ones I think. I've been slow to convert and it appears that is a problem. I moved a few files from C to E but I'm not certain "I" created a backup before the move but windows may have. It shows 4 back-ups, 2 are large and 2 are small in size. I have another "backup user" that I think come from the C drive before the SSD conversion. That drive was then changed to F at first then it became the current E drive. Please don't ask me to explain that, it would tax my already frazzled mind.

I think your suggestions are on track. I will delete the 4 backups first. The "backup user" that I think came from my old C drive before the SSD conversion I want to save at this time. Then I will see if windows lets me create a "new full backup". If not then I'll need to transfer any remaining files from the "backup user" and delete that as well.

Thanks for your help, I'll report the results, I think & hope this is the cure.
