What do you mean stuttering??? And did it happen with Battlefield 3? Also what do you mean mirroring 2GB. Sorry I am a noob

Microstuttering.

Yeah. My 6950CF setup running at 110FPS (According to Afterburner) felt like it was running at 30-40FPS.

As for mirroring. All of the ''work'' is done on the first card's memory. It is mirrored on the second card. So, you aren't going to have 4GBs or VRAM.

correct me if i'm wrong, but i thought the RAM doesnt add because each card only uses the RAM on its own pcb, hence the reason that adding a 1gb card to an existing 2gb card will bottleneck the performace of the xfire setup. even if one card has 2gb of ram available to it, the other card will overload if the application in question is requestiong over 1gb of memory.

sorry in advance if this is going off topic! i just want to (hopefully) put to rest a topic that many are confused about tongue.gif

oh i'll also add in an observation that i made with my crossfired 6870s..i noticed that the xfire setup had absolutely no microstutter when i used a 120hz monitor, but had quite a lot of microstutter when i used a 60hz monitor. one 6870 on my 60hz felt smoother than two, despite higher framerates. i dont know why.

Honestly, multi-GPU is the biggest gimmick. I'm not touching CFX or SLI ever again. I echo the sentiments that 40FPS on a single card feels smoother than 60FPS on dual-GPUs --- frame times and microstuttering probably have to do with this.

Go with the 7950.

That's because with 1 card you don't have any micro stutter AT ALL. As soon as a 2nd is added the you get micro stutter. Let's look at it if there was a value for micro stutter, let's just say 10, and we'll add 40fps per card. I'll try not to confuse anyone.

1 card = no micro stutter = 0 40fps
2 cards = micro stutter = 10 < here's that value 80fps
3 cards = micro stutter = 20 120fps
4 cards = micro stutter = 30 160fps

As that number gets higher 0,10,20,30, your micro stutter becomes more noticeable. Just because your fps is getting higher, doesn't mean it will give you better game play, it will actually get worst, way worst. My Gtx295 Quad sli was insane for benchmarks, but was terrible game play.

If you can't get 40fps or better with 1 card in the game you are playing, you will want more power. If your using the latest and greatest card available, you have no other option then to Crossfire or Sli. If your using a middle of the road card and get another to equal the latest and greatest, you will not experience the same game play as you now will encounter "micro stutter".

This is the reason I will stand by the new 7970 until something comes out better. I was only running 3 480's because you couldn't do Surround on 1 card. Now with this 7970, I'm playing 90% of my games in Eyefinity way smoother than before even tho my fps isn't locked at 60 anymore.

Sorry if I confused you tongue.gif

They don't add because the same textures are loaded to both cards.

Toms did an article that actually proved 3 and 4 cards don't stutter as much as 2
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/radeon-geforce-stutter-crossfire,2995-6.html

Also, I get no stutter in ANY of my games besides SWTOR, and then I just disable card 2 because SWTOR only uses like 30% of a single GPU at max anyway. After they release a CAP it usually resolves any issues, so if you play games that are over a month old you are usually fine!

My second card I just paid for has already been shipped
So guess I am about to find out myself

I would go for a single HD 7970, with an aftermarket cooler. Gigabyte is what I've ordered (two of them). Overclock them to 1125 (or more if your card can bypass the limit) and performance will match two 6950's. 1125 can USUALLY be achieved with stock volts, while a slight bump adds more over-clocking headroom.

When you feel you want to upgrade your monitor (higher res or eyefinity) or in 8-12 months when your card ain't cutting it on MAXED OUT EVERY SINGLE GAME you can simply add another one and get 180% performance.

Many people say they plan for this but few actually end up doing it. Selling the 7970 and getting a then-current card is always the better option. Look at the 6950 in this very situation.

I'll maintain my opinion that multi-GPUs are only for benchmarkers, noobs, and/or show-offs.
