6950 CF or Single 7970 - Page 6

I ran 6950's in cross fire and it worked very well. Almost never noticed stutter at 1600p. I sold them for what I paid at launch and downgraded to 6870's that I got for super cheap when I was convinced that the 79xx series was going to drop in September so I wanted a interim setup to fool with before gfx card prices crashed (yes I was overzealous). The 6870's had lots of stutter on certain games even though they technically were quite fast when benched. 6950's were much better experience. I sold the 6970's shortly after as I was not satisfied and tried a few more cards like the GTX 580 and my current unlocked 6950. I ordered a Sapphire 7950OC instead of going back to x-fire, but not because I dislike x-fire, but because two of them are an absolute furnace and two of them together starts to become a bit more audible than I like. Based on what I have read, if I can OC the 7950 to 1150-ish the performance will be close enough to my x-fired 6950's minus the heat and noise and occassional x-fire problems like little to no scaling in certain games (mostly new releases).

I just got my second 6950 2gb in the mail today, installed it with my second one just a few hours ago. I then booted up BF3 just to see what this whole micro studder thing is all about.

Well It seemed to run perfectly smooth for me. I played around in an empty server for about an hour or so and I could never figure out what microstudder was. I was running around shooting things shaking the camera while running and doing everything I could to tax the GPU's more and couldn't figure out what everyone is complaining about. People have been running multiple GPU setups for years, why would this only become an issue now. Especially considering how powerful modern GPU's are now.

Framerates were between 45 - 60 average while never dropping below 30fps. And this is with a huge CPU bottleneck. If you check my sig rig you will see I still only have a q6600. Catalyst Control center showed the 6950's running at about 70-75%. My Sapphire dirt 3 6950's stay below 70, average temp is closer to 66~60. That with a side mounted fractal 140mm fan blowing cool air on them.

If you want my opinion I say get whichever one is cheaper. 6950 xfire may be more powerful, but a single gpu setup is always a better way to go. I have a feeling though that once nvidia releases its next gen things are gunna change regarding to pricing. But you cant let things like that worry you, its inevitable.

eliminate that bottleneck and your looking at a 75%-100% increase in fps.

Now you see why there's a bit of hate towards CFX. I really can't say that I hate it. I've used it every since my Sli 280's, quad sli 295's, CFX 5870's, Tri Sli 480's, and now 7970, and another on order. I've set up a bunch of people in Eyefinity and Surround. On 3 screens is when you notice the micro stutter a lot more. 1 screen, you probably don't notice it or you don't understand what it is.

I've played 105hrs of MW3 on my Tri Sli 480's, I've tried everything to smooth out the game. Nothing helped, but I still played. Now with this 7970 running the same settings and running 5860x1080(bezel correction) it's butter smooth. No hate on either end, but I can say it is a whole new world of how smooth a game can play.

My friend that live 5min away didn't believe me either. He came over and in 10mins he asked how much he could sell his 6950's for. If you put the same game on both setups side by side, it's night and day.

I am going to try 2 7970's because I do like power and running everything locked at 60fps, but I'm so close to having the performance I'm looking for and able to play the games I do in Eyefinity with no issues at all. I have a water block coming in tomorrow and will see how that works out. If I can get this card to 1200/1600, that's all I'll need for now and will probably settle.

I agree completely, but the ignorant people saying "microstutter is a myth because I can't see it" are infuriating.

It's great when your cards are at the top like 7970s are now since there's no way to get a more powerful single GPU, but CFX should always be considered a temporary fix because a single GPU is not powerful enough.

furious over the net? lol

Micro stuttering is not a myth and nobody ever said it was, that just shows you obviously cannot grasps anything being discussed.

I had it and relieved it, its possible. You just cant do it, so you claim its not possible. lol

Absolutely it's infuriating. I don't understand the need to deny it rather than just accepting they can't perceive it.
It's like judder when playing movies at 60 Hz. It bugs the crap out of a lot of people but, even though I can see it, it doesn't really bother me and my wife can't even perceive it.

Microstutter is real. I'm fortunate that I can tolerate a fair bit before going bonkers, but I can definitely perceive it. Part of this is that I don't play many online multiplayer twitch shooters where microstutter can really mess with your game. Playing strategy games or FPS games slow on single player it makes much less of a difference. I'm far more bothered by texture shimmer.

That said, I totally understand how aggravating microstutter must be to the twitch wizards of BF3, etc. I used to be one of those back in the Doom2/Q3A, etc. days but then I got old and slow smile.gif

You don't seem to understand. You simply cannot eliminate all microstutter.
In many games you can nearly eliminate it by cranking down the eye-candy and framerate capping at < 30 Hz, but if you think you've eliminated all microstutter it simply means you've reduced it to a point were you don't notice it. I guarantee you if you run a frame counter you'll find microstutters. It's very easy to do.

I say this as someone who has minimized microstutter to tolerable levels (for me personally) in many games but verified it was still there by taking framerate logs and seeing the occasional hiccup. The methods you allude to (but do not elaborate on) are all well-known and many of us have spent lots of time with them.

One of the more frustrating things is to tweak settings (with something like Radeon pro or Nvidia Inspector) only to have the next driver release change something so that you have to re-tweak.

Anyway...

Mize, I can't tell you how many times I have done the same. Crysis 2 had very bad micro stutter issues until loading a custom profile using Nvidia inspector. I've lost many hours to messing with everything. Even rechecking my overclock on cpu and running hours of stress to see if something changed. Everything was always fine yet stutter, stu stu stutter. It's real frustrating when I pan to the left to shoot you in the head and always shoot over your shoulder move a bit to the right and then shoot over your other shoulder sniper.gif ..

Now with 1 card, my 7970, you better duck or your getting your head blown off and so is the next guy on your team tongue.gif
