Recommend me a laptop. Budget $1200

Recommend me a laptop. Budget $1200

Primary use will be for schoolwork.

I attend LAN parties at times. The games I primarily play are Starcraft II and Minecraft. Though, I'd love it if the laptop could handle Battlefield 3, too.

Unless the screen size is small, I also want a decent resolution.

I care a lot for aesthetics. I'd like it to be portable. 15.6" is my limit.

The following laptops have been ruled out:
1. Lenovo Y series
Reason: Resolution too low (unless there's a model of it with a higher res?)

2. Sager
Reason: Too ugly and bulky

3. ASUS G series
Reason: Too ugly and bulky

4. Anything Alienware
Reason: Lack of portability (except for the M11x which still is deceptively heavy for its size)

I've been looking at the HP Envy laptops but I'm concerned about the IPS color issue (fails to display the color red).

I've also been looking at the LG P330 but I have no idea when it'll be released in the United States. A laptop similar to the LG P330 would be ideal for me.

Edit: I am fine with an eGPU solution if you could explain what I need for it.

If you can wait, Lenovo Y580 is coming out soon with new processors and GPUs. Will also have 1080p.

http://www.amazon.com/N53SV-B1-15-6-Inch-Versatile-Entertainment-Aluminum/dp/B004X5YCOI/ref=sr_1_10?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329322489&sr=1-10

That is a decent laptop that should handle games OK. But I still would wait for these newer GPUs to pop up.

That seems to be great GPU and good screen.

That was a really helpful post.

The ASUS N55 seems like it fits my needs.

I'll also be looking out for the release of the Lenovo Y580. My only problem with the current Y series is that their resolutions are horrible. The Y580 would fix that problem.

Edit: How did you get the laptop in your sig for $443?

+rep for you and thanks.

I'm pretty sure he got that laptop for $443 from Lenovo Outlet: http://outlet.lenovo.com . They have insane deals fairly often.

I'd second the Ideapad Y580 recommendation if you can wait until May. Other highlights of it - backlit keyboard, Nvidia 660M (should be similar to a 570M), i7 quad, etc.

If you need one sooner, I'd probably go with a Samsung Chronos 15". There's an i7 and i5 model, both have AMD 6750M, this here is the i5 (though someone is selling a new i7 model for $1150 there as well) . http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-NP700Z5A-S09US-15-6-Inch-Laptop-Silver/dp/B006PAAMA2/ref=sr_1_8?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1329330830&sr=1-8

Why the Samsung? Backlit keyboard, under 1" thick, easily the best-looking laptop with those graphics, except perhaps the MBP 15 (which is $500+ more).

Wow. The Samsung laptop looks really slick. What is the resolution of it, though? It doesn't specify.

It seems to resemble the HP Envy 15" a lot, though. How do you think it compares against it?

And is it already released?

Edit: On another note, there was a refurbished G73 on sale for $300 at Cowboom the other day but I missed it.

Mine is cheap, and works well. It does some gaming with the HD 3000, which is surprisingly powerful for an intel chip. I have been playing CS:S and TF2 with settings on high with AA off. I am sure it can handle SC2 easily on low. I've heard that it can't really handle BF3 yet because of driver issues and lack of real power. You probably want something better, but I absolutely love this laptop. Cheap and high quality.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834157822

There is a more expensive version with i7 and ATI 6490m and HD 3000 which is <$1000. It will probably be able to handle BF3 on low, or maybe medium.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834158138

My laptop runs really cool, but I have heard that the i7 does make it a little warmer. I have no experience with it. Screen is the only real downside to the laptop, with a low resolution and less than average quality of color and brightness.

1600x900 resolution. There might be a 1920x1080 model but I forget. Against the HP Envy? The Samsung is thinner by a little, weighs less, has a higher-quality battery (supposedly holds 80% charge after 1500 cycles - most batteries are useless by 500-1000), and better battery life. Also if you look at them both, the Samsung has a thinner bezel, cleaner styling, and so on. http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/04/samsung-series-7-chronos-review/
http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/28/hp-envy-15-review-early-2012/

Maybe you can get more performance at the same price with an Envy 15 but I'd personally go with the Samsung, much cleaner look overall.
