Issue with programs failing to start

Thread Starter
I've run across a new one.

When I tried to open Wordpad today, it gave me this:

The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000005). Click OK to close the application.

It later did the same with Notepad and Firefox, then with Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

Any ideas?

Oh boy.. my favorite error... rolleyes.gif

Since you've mentioned your 0xc0000005 errors happen only when trying to execute programs, our first step is to scan for malware. I recommend you run a quick scan with Malwarebytes.

Second, I recommend you check the integrity of the system files. In Start Search box type CMD, rightclick result to Run as Admin, type sfc /scannow

When did this issue start happening, was it out of the blue, or are you on a clean install of Windows and is this a new issue that came with the clean install?

Shortly after posting that, I had to manually shutdown after the desktop disappeared.

At the time this issue started happening, I was recovering music files from an old SanDisk Sansa e260r mp3 player.
Programs running were HWMonitor v1.18, Speedfan v4.45, CoreTemp 0.99.7, Skype v5.5.0.124, F@H SMP CPU Client 6.34, Windows Media Player v12.0.7601.17514, iTunes v10.1.2.17, Rainmeter v2.1.0 r959, TurboV, Firefox 10.0.1, EVGA Precision v2.1.1, and DisplayFusion Pro v3.4.0.

My Windows install is from September 2010.
I have gotten bluescreens in the past, but only from unstable overclocks, nothing like this.

After manual shutdown, I pulled the Ethernet cable, unplugged the mp3 player, and rebooted in safe mode.
I ran both Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy, with zero results.

I rebooted in normal mode, and everything came up normal. I then plugged in the Ethernet cable, and got an instant blue-screen without an error code.
The bluescreen listed running chkdsk /f as a troubleshooting idea.

I unplugged the Ethernet cable, and my router, and rebooted into safe mode with command prompt.
I set up chkdsk to run on the next startup, and rebooted into normal mode.

I fell asleep while it was running chkdsk.

When I woke up (a few minutes ago), I plugged the router back in, woke up the computer from sleep mode, plugged the Ethernet in, and everything seems to be working okay.

I will run the scan you suggested and let you know the results.

*EDIT: I ran the check you suggested.

Verification 100% Complete

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
*End edit*

*Edit 2: Updated with running programs and program version numbers.*

I just got a bluescreen after the system had been running for most of the day with the following code:

STOP: 0x00000024 (0x001904fb, 0xa1d87a14, 0xa1d875f0, 0x4d629204)

Programs running were TurboV, DisplayFusion Pro, Spybot-SD Resident, and the League of Legends game client.

When I rebooted, I had a flag saying to update Windows Defender.

I didn't have these issues start happening until after I installed Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy.

Two latest dump files (2/15/12 and 2/17/12) are attached.

When loading those dump files into the debugger, nothing happens. I've never seen this before. Since those dump files aren't debugged, we're just going to have to go by bugcheck code, but we're lucky, because the bugcheck code you got only means one thing.

0x00000024 bugcheck is NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM. It's a very common BSOD and can mean a lot of things. Data and/or file structures on the drive may be corrupt. Run the check disk program or other disk validation and repair utility on the drive. The hard disk or disk controller may be failing and creating errors or problems that the driver cannot handle.

Check that the cabling is plugged in securely, and if using SCSI drives, make sure the drive cables are terminated properly. You might remove the drive and test it non-destructively on another system. Also note if the system works either when first turned on (i.e. cold) or if it requires the system to be on for a while (i.e. hot). This is an excellent clue that you have a thermal hardware problem.
Quote:
A problem occurred in the NTFS file system driver, Ntfs.sys. This critical file is used to read and write all NTFS drives.

First thing we're going to do is:
  • Open Explorer or My Computer (Press Windows+E).
  • In the right pane, right-click on the drive you want to validate and select Properties.
  • Select the Tools tab.
  • Under Error-checking, click on "Check Now".

482

In the next dialog, make sure the option "Automatically fix file system errors" is checked. If you want a more complete validation and repair check the option "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" (although this takes considerably longer to complete).

225

  • Click on Start.

You have also mentioned this had not started happening until you installed Malwarebytes and Spybot. I haven't personally used Spybot, so I'm unsure as to whether it runs in the background at all times, or if it's just a scanner. If it runs in the background like a normal anti virus, remove or disable it for testing purposes.

According to HW Monitor, my HDD usually sits right around 31C. Its a 1TB SATA Seagate Barracuda 7200.12, bought in September 2010.

Disc scan is scheduled for next reboot. After I finish backing up my pictures into a .rar, I'll reboot and post results.

I don't know if this will help, but this is a complete copy of all the files in the Minidump folder. minidump complete.zip 537k .zip file

Thanks for those Tohru, and thanks to your cooperation thus far. I was able to debug some of the ones that weren't most recent.

Before we begin, I ask you do the following:

1. If any of your hardware is overclocked, PLEASE reset it to stock settings / optimized defaults whilst trying to diagnose BSOD related issues. You're absolutely more than welcome to re-overclock your hardware after we've gone through your issues.

2. If you have RAID, please update its driver. If you're unsure of how to do this or where to download the drivers, please don't hesitate to ask and I will do my best to point you in the right direction.

I have taken a look at your dumps, many different errors, but mostly memory corruption.

First off, just by looking at ONE dump file, the first culprit was Abyssus.sys, which is the driver for the Razer Abyssus. Please update this driver here.

I noticed you also have the SPTD.sys driver SPTD.sys is the SCSI Pass Through Direct Host for Daemon Tools. It is a causer of well known issues in the Windows 7 environment. Please uninstall whatever ISO program / virtualization program you're using. Once you've done this, use DuplexSecure to ensure that SPTD.sys is fully removed.

Old drivers that also need to be updated:
Quote:
bcgame.sys - Belkin Nostromo USB HID driver system driver file. Here.

wacommousefilter.sys - Wacom(tablet) Mouse Filter. Here.

Also, please if you have not already install Service Pack 1.

If resetting the overclock and doing the above has still not fixed your issue, then we move on to memtest86 since you had a fair amount of memory corruption errors, and some dump files weren't able to load in the debugger, which I've never seen before.

Thread Starter
1. My CPU is overclocked to 4.1GHz (2.8GHz stock), so I'll bump that back down to factory.
2. I don't have RAID, just the single drive.

I realize some of my bluescreens are from (or at least seemed to be from) experimenting with overclocking.

I got the Abyssus January 21st, and immediately noticed issues with the program it runs in the toolbar. I removed it after it gave me issues. I did follow the link and installed the newest drivers- v2.01.

I uninstalled Daemon Tools Lite and used DuplexSecure to remove SPTD.sys. It's waiting on me to reboot to complete changes.

I had the newest drivers for the Belkin Nostromo, but I ran the repair option in InstallShield.

I updated drivers for the Wacom Bamboo with the Driver and Software Installation tool and driver release 5.2.5-5a(RC).

My rig is currently running Win7 Home Premium with Service Pack 1.

I will reboot now, reset my OC to stock clocks, and let you know how it goes.
