Problems with my 7800 GTX video card

Thread Starter
Hi Guys,

I recently put together a new system. I'm overclocking the CPU and GPU at the moment. I have 1GB mushkin DDR800 RAM, a Geforce 7800 GTX and my CPU is P4 3.8Ghz 2MB L2 Cache running at around 4.2Ghz. Now my problem is when it comes to playing games at full spec I still get stuttering - i'm talking about games like FEAR, Oblivion: Elder scrolls, HL2. My system should be able to run these games without serious stutter shouldn't it?? FEAR seems to be the worst - when you turn a corner into a new corridor thats when I get the most stuttering. Is my graphics card good enough to run games like these at near to full spec's? Could it be the fact that i only have 1GB of RAM?? Lots of people say that stuttering can be caused by a lack of RAM and that new games need 2GB to run smoothly?

Any help would be great

J

Yup, if you want to run intensive games at high settings, you'll probably need 2 GB of memory. Especially Oblivion and FEAR.

What kind of memory would you suggest?

Would it be better having 2GB to 4GB of DDR2 667 Mhz memory, rather than 1GB to 2GB of DDR2 800 Mhz memory, even though the latter has a higher MHz??

2GBs should be fine. Go for higher clocks and tight timings (gotta look for the sweet spot).

As said, I already have 1GB of Mushkin DDR2 800 memory. If i was to buy another 1GB of memory could i buy DDR2 800 from another brand i.e. OCZ, g.skill etc? I'm guessing that this isn't advisable in case one bank of memory is capable of higher speeds than the other - i.e the faster bank of memory would be restricted to lower speeds by the slower memory???

I'm thinking of selling my 1GB Mushkin memory and getting 2GB of DDR2 667, as the memory I have is no-longer made anymore, otherwise I would have just bought another gig of that - how annoying

Advice please

Just add another gig of DDR2 800 memory, if you can, so you can run them in dual channel, as you need the same speed and size. Same brand and model is preferable but not necessary for dual channel mode (usually), and buying 2 gigs for a 5-10% increase isn't worth it.
Unless you can replace that Mushkin cheaply.

Ok. My current 1GB of Mushkin (2 banks of 512MB) is running in dual channel at the moment, so its ok to just add another 1gig of another brand of DDR2 800 in the other dual channel slots?

The thing is I think ASUS have pulled a swift one. It says that my P5ND2 Sli Deluxe MB supports DDR2 800, yet in the Qualified List Vendors (QVL) for the RAM there are no DDR2 800 modules.

It says in the manual:

DDR2-800/667 with 800 MHz capability*

No modules listed

* 'ASUS has tested and overclocked these memory modules to 720MHZ. ASUS, however, does not guarantee that these modules will run at the same speed on your system.'

So does that mean using DDR2 800 RAM does not guarantee that it will run at DDR2 800? Thats why i was thinking of scrapping the DDR2 800 altogether and going with 2 gigs of DDR667?? Can anyone clarify this for me? CPU-Z says my memory is running at 400Mhz???
