Graphic display error

MOBO: GA-EP45-UD3L (~1 yr old)
CPU: E6750 (~4 yrs old)
GPU: 8800GT (~4 yrs old)
RAM: 4GB (~2 yrs old)
PSU: Antec earthwatts 650w (~1 yr old)

A few days ago while playing Skyrim, I received an error "display driver has stopped responding but has successfully recovered," then followed by a BSOD. I figured it was just a hiccup so after the reboot i fired up the game again and same thing happened. I thought maybe it was a skyrim issue, so I loaded another game that I had previously played fine with my current drivers, but the same error popped up again.

Fast forward a day or two later, now when i go into device manager, my video card has a yellow "!" and it says 'windows has stopped this device because it's reporting problems (code 43).' I've done a lot of installing and reinstalling different versions of drivers, but it has not resolved anything.

I've also swapped my 8800gt for a friend's 8800gt, but same results.

I don't think that it's a hardware issue, although I will not completely rule it out until i try swapping in a different gpu chip other than a 8800. All temps seems fine. I've tried using a different power pin from my PSU. My guess would be either corrupt registry files or BIOS or chipset issues, but unfortunately looking at those are a little beyond my capabilities.

Have you installed anything new recently?
Do you get the same issue in other games?
What drivers are you running atm? (Video Card)
Have you had any power loss whilst handling files or folders?
Changed any settings for hardware, or for the OS recently?
How long have you ran this installation of windows?

1. The only thing new i installed was skyrim and its graphical upgrade dlc. The DLC recommends 1GB of GPU RAM, but mine only has half of that. Could that have been the problem?

2. I get the same issue with other games only AFTER it began with skyrim. Now my windows fails to recognize my card fully.

3. Currently i'm running 285.62 driver.

4. no

5. no

6. About 1.5 years

Sounds like a driver issue. Check the forums I have seen a couple different threads regarding Nvidia and Skyrim issues. Also like you stated could be because your card doesn't meet minimum requirements.

My card does meet the minimum requirements, just not the recommended smile.gif. I can't find a minimum specs for the extra texture DLC; they only list the recommended, and again, my card doesn't meet the recommended.

Turn the texture pack off. Run skyrim and go into data options and untick the esp files to disable the high res pack. Test the game again.
I think it is a software issue seen as this only happenes in one game. I also believe that things have gotten a bit messy in the driver department which can happen overtime as you upgrade this and uninstall that and so on.

So, untick the esp'a
And, go to my docs, skyrim, skyrimpref.ini, open via notepad and look for the line of code that says the name of your graphics card. Just make sure the information is correct.

My pref.ini says "sD3DDevice="NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580"

Yours should say sD3DDevice="NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT"

It's not just a Skyrim issue...it's a total 'everything' issue. Now I can't run any games or open any programs related to graphics (EVGA precision, FurMark) because there's a problem detecting my graphics card. See below.

438
439

I've again done a driver uninstall and install using the latest drivers (285.62). Here's how I do the procedure. Feel free to offer any advice if I should do something differently.

1) Uninstall my video card in device manager.
2) Boot in safe mode and run driver sweeper. Clean anything related to nvidia. Reboot.
3) Install drivers. Reboot.
4) Cross fingers.

I believe this is a isolated issue with the video card. A friend let me borrow his HD 6950 and after installing its drivers, my computer ran fine. I ran FurMark, booted saints row 3 and skyrim for several minutes each, and everything was fine. After I was satisfied with that, I put back the 8800's and I got the same old problem.

I've yet to try the two 8800GT's on a different computer to see whether the cards are the issue. however, I think it's rather unlikely that both cards suddenly have major issues at the same time when they were running fine since the spring of '08 when they were purchased. I think BradleyW is right that something probably got messy somewhere in the drivers. Either way, I think the next step is to test the 8800s on another system. I'll post back with the results.

When I returned the 6950 back, my friend was gracious enough to let me test my 8800's on his system. But alas, it pretty much had the identical results--same low resolution, yellow '!' in device manager, etc etc. He just built his system 2 weeks ago, brand new. This is a big disappointment, as my last option was to reformat my main hard drive hoping it would resolve the issue.

At this point, it looks like my options are few. I do have another friend who, I think, has very similar components as mine, including a 8800GT. As a last ditch effort I suppose I could nicely ask him if he's willing to let me swap cards for a few minutes biggrin.gif.

8800gt might need to be baked. I know these cards are known for failing. Also make sure you ram and cpu are still stable. maybe a quick prime 95 testing, you ram could have gone bad?

I'm sure both my cpu and RAM are stable. I've not done any new OC'ing lately. The OC'ing that I have (cpu from 2.6 to 3.2) has been running for months now w/o any issues. I've not tested these RAM yet on memtest, but I'm quite sure they're fine. In addition, like i said before, testing the 8800s on my friend's brand new system yielded the exact results as on mine...not to mention his hd6950 installed flawlessly on my system.
