Looking to play skyrim on 1080p with my old rig - Can you guys help me pick a course of action?

Hey guys,

I've had my rig for about 4 years and I've really neglected upgrading for some time. I kinda wanted to wait until ivy bridge came out to upgrade since I don't really do too much with my rig to warrant a total upgrade. Recently I've purchased skyrim and can play it decently on medium settings at 1080p but I'm looking to have a better experience than that. I was considering upgrading my rig with an extra 2gb's of ram and also getting a newer video card.

What I was wondering is what video card would you suggest to upgrade to? I currently have my ancient 8800gtx in my machine and I know that any recent GPU's would smash that. I'm trying to set a budget around $150 but if the performance increase is really that huge from spending an extra $50 then I wouldn't mind going that route.

I also fear that my CPU would bottleneck some of the performance? I have it slightly overclocked but I haven't really pushed it at all and don't intend to due to the weak airflow in my room.

Please advise me on a course of action, I really want to get a better gaming experience on skyrim without having to completely upgrade my whole system.

Thanks in advance!! biggrin.gif

AMD 6870 would be a good all round choice.
What overclock can you get on your CPU?

You would need to lower shadows to medium due to your CPU. Even i can't run Ultra at 4.7GHz HT in a few locations.

Probably close to 3ghz stable if I push the cpu fan a bit. I just don't like to have it sounding like a jet engine so I just use it conservatively. I do have a decent zalman fan on it too so it's enough to keep it cool.

Yea I was definitely considering the 6870 as kinda the bang for your buck video card right now. Would you guys advise the 1gb or the 2gb? I'm not quite sure if the additional cost increase from 1gb to 2gb would be worth it?

The 7750s and 7770s should be out soon and around that price. The 6870s beat them in some areas, but the newer cards are well newer and use less power.

I've seen 6870's beat 7770's cards by 8-10fps on average in DX10/11 applications.

The 2gb is the same price as a 6950 and the 6950 performs way better, if you are going that route get a used 6950, try and get reference, and OC/unlock and have an amazing card!

I know, but weak air flow means these things powering down will help to keep them cooler.
