Asus Radeon 5850 OC questions

Thread Starter
Which program is better to use to OC this card? Should I use msi afterburner or SmartDoctor? SmartDoctor seems to let me OC the voltage more as I can go up as high as 1.35 without any real issues.

My second question is I have the engine set to 950 and the memory set to 5000 and the voltage at exactly 1.343....Is this a reasonable OC for this card with stock cooling?

Thank you.

MSI Afterburner with the config edit will allow you to push the voltage higher

That overclock is good ; but with 1.343V how are your temps?

Also, overclocking memory is pretty much useless for most things. wink.gif

Temps are staying around 72c while playing SWTOR on max....also frapsing as well.

SmartDoctor will not allow me to push my core any more than 950 at this point....I have edited my msi afterburner but it will only allow me to go 100 percent more than stock which leaves me around 1.281 max voltage in games....

What can I do to alter msi afterburner to allow for higher voltage?

Thanks

Look in this guide:

You change a line in the config file in Afterburner to "confirm" that you are overclocking and that MSI takes no responsibility. They only lock it for legal reasons, but allow you [enthusiasts] to unlock it.

Stability~~~
Since your temps are already 73°C, I wouldn't be pushing your voltage much higher. What are you using to test stability on GPU?

Temperatures ~~~
Try something more GPU intensive like GUIMiner. My 5850 got rocked by that. Never went above 60C in games, and in GUI Miner I had to double my fan speed to keep it at 70-80C.

I have already done that in MSI....That is still the max it will go.....Any other suggestions?
My suggestion is don't feed it more voltage. That's enough...
Most people suggest a safe max voltage of 1.35V, while most people keep it around 1.2-1.3V anyways.

What I want to get higher is the core speed though and this smartdoctor wont let me go past 950...I want to go up to 1000 if I can.

rivatuner
add "6898H,6899h,

in the rivatuner cfg file....under "rv770"

you can also copy your bios and tweak it..with rbe..
also..you can flash to a 5870 bios to get more voltage
