5850 Crossfire or Replacement?

Thread Starter
Hello, I'm looking to get more performance out of my games. Should I find another 5850 and crossfire them or would it be better to just sell off the one I have and find a newer single card replacement?

First, would my power supply be able to handle a second 5850 if I went that route? I am not interested in getting a new power supply, so that would be a deal breaker on a second 5850 then.

Assuming I could either buy a second 5850 or sell mine for $100-140 (just a ball parking it) so that would give me a budget of $250 if I opted to sell my 5850 and then spend another $130 or so. Of course if I could spend less, that would be good too. My mobo has an on board gpu so I could deal with going with out a real card if I sold my 5850 (I'd rather not spend 250 before selling my present card first.)

What would be my best choices for replacements if I went with a new card? I'm not brand loyal just what would be the best value/performance. Recommendations on any of this would be appreciated, thanks.

I suggest going with Crossfire. For $250, you won't be able to find a single card setup that will out do Crossfire in performance.

Here is just an idea:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/MSI/GTX_560_Ti_448_Cores_Twin_Frozr_III/17.html

GTX 560 ti 448 Core

Performs on par with a gtx 570 and with a mild overclock it will out perform the 570. Ditch any possible crossfire problems and you are good to go. Its a bit more than budget but at 250 is the 3 6950 and it won't perform as well.

5850 will sell for 130 or so on here Shipped or 140 or so on eBay.

If your resolution is 1920x1080 or higher I would sell the card and look for a used HD 6950 2GB. It should only be around $200.
If your resolution is 1680x1050 or lower I would just crossfire the HD 5850 with an HD 5830. They're only about $90 here on OCN.

Crossfire isn't supported in all games, so I would recommend getting an HD 6950 2GB regardless.

On second thought I suggest the above...yuo wont find a 5850 on here for $90. Still quite a demand for them

Also depends on his gaming preferences

Your PSU would easily handle a second 5850 in CF wink.gif
As stated you would get the most performance for your $ with that configuration, for a single-card setup (and a performance jump worth taking) you'd really need to spend more.

2 x HD 5850 is very faster. The only limiting thing is 1GB RAM and thats only in BF3 and high resolutions.

Well I will keep my eye out for a used 5850 it sounds like. I thought about the 5850/5830 combo but if its only $20-30 savings, I'd rather just stick to the pair of 5850's. This combo should plenty for me for the next couple years then.

Thanks everyone!
