Any way to cool this SLI setup?

This is the way my rig is setup, with 2 x MSI Twin Frozr ii 2GB 560tis.

In Battlefield 3, under certain situations the top GPU will like to reach 85C + (Max 90C on two occasions) and the bottom 80C. This is running @1.025V @925/1880/2004. The majority of the time they are both in the 70C region.

*All case fans are akasa venom voodoo.

*MSI Afterburner fan profile @ 100% after 70C

*Case Fans 100% after 45C case temp.

*As the case is the Nvidia edition, I am not able to install a side case fan.

*I have spare 120mm case fans available for use.

*Also ambient temperature is quite warm, about 25-27C.

Would there be any solution available to help reduce the temps 10C or so, without taking the side panel off?

i would get another 120mm and velcro it to the side of the two cards. push some cool air directly into the card fans

Yea I say get a 120mm fan and put right on the side of the cards. I plan on putting one on mine like that when I get another 470 in the next week or so.
For the top 560, have a fan sit on top of the 6pin cables? You could always try to stack fans as if you had a front panel inside lol (Yes, I've done this with 3 fans)

with cards stuck so darn close together, you really need directed air flow.

There's really nothing wrong with those temps, esp. not OC'd and OV'd. Maybe your cards last 9 years instead of 10 if they ran 10C cooler. Does that matter?

I wouldn't stress on 'em at all.

This being said, if it really bugs you, I would remove any HD trays that do not contain HD's at this moment, and get as powerful a fan for your bottom and front fans as possible, and possibly remove the dust filters on them, as filters tend to really restrict airflow ... esp. when you also have to push air through a HD enclosure like that one.

Lastly I've never found that (except in some very rare cases) side fans are overall a good idea. They might drop your GPU's by a couple C, but they disrupt the airflow from front/bottom to rear/top , and create 'dead zones' that just make other components hotter.

What's the ambient temperature of your room? Also, is there ample room around the computer for air to flow? Ideally you want the exhaust area at least 6 inches away from a wall/desk cubby.

I think temperatures like that are a bit high for TFII's.. my previous 560ti TFII/OC barely ever reached 70C in BF3 [1080p, AA off, AO off, motion blur off, AF 16x, ultra textures, high everything else], and my current 560ti TFIII/PE/OC does the same. Is dust a problem in your house/apartment? Might consider giving the heatsinks a good dusting off with a compressed air duster.

Lastly, does your side panel have a window with vents? Or mesh? Since the TFII exhausts into the case, you may consider adding an exhaust side panel fan (rather than a traditional intake side panel fan)

I thought at first you have a very similar setup to mine (I have 2 SLI 470s in an Nvidia edition HAF X, the green drive bays on your threw me)

Those cards are well-spaced and the TFII is generally a good cooler (I'm getting better than that with one of my TFs fans BROKEN at 1.087v)

You may need better fans? The benefit of the HAF X is it comes with a side fan and an airduct that goes over the gfx cards that you can put a 120mm in. Looks like you have a fan in that position though.

I would definitely check your ambient temp.

Thanks for all the replies guys, great forum.

The ambient is quite warm, about 27C.

There is no dust issue, but as I have probably went overboard on the dust filters restricting airflow.

I think I am going to modify the VGA cooler that came with the case, which originally supports one measly 80 x 15mm fan, and mount 2 x akasa venom voodoo 120mm fans blowing air directly into both GPUs and see how that goes.

The side panel doesn't support side fans as seen here:

443

I'll try and get it set up today and anyone with the same issue can see if it is worth the effort. I am not too bothered as I will be moving to kepler most likely, it is just I would like to OC them a bit more and I can't with the heat they are already putting out.

This is my first build since the days of the 6800 ultra cards, so heat has become a much more prominent issue that I didn't think would be as problematic... now I know, especially with multi GPU setups!

For anyone interested I got two old 120mm fans, attached them via elastic and had them blow into both GPUs:

Reduced temps under the same map in BF3 and conditions by about 7-10C.

338

Going to set it up in a more permanent way later on.
