Home server for file storage AND gaming

Before I start planning this build, I want to make sure there is software available to do what I want.

I want to build a homeserver for two functions:

1) File storage so my living room HTPC, as well as any other house computer, can access all my files.

2) Allow me to play video games silently on my HTPC while the loud graphics card roars in my server closet.

I know #1 is no problem, but I don't know if #2 can be done. Has anyone made something like this? Could it work over a strong wireless network or would it need ethernet?
What program are you using? Is Remote Desktop capable of that kind of thing?
I can't see why it would be different than streaming video or music from my server, but I guess video games are much more interactive and use more bandwidth, so lag could be a big factor.
Just to clarify, this is only for use within the home network. I don't want to play videogames on my home server from work...well I do, but thats a pipe dream.

The file sharing is super simple, that's no problem at all.

The gaming though. I don't think it can be done even through a LAN. I mean the bandwidth required, plus the control setup etc. That's why there is software and hardware like Onlive that is made for those things. You could try RDP but if that doesn't work I have no idea what else would.

I'm not saying it's not possible but it would require a lot of research and a lot of time put into it as well.

Who know's I'm sure there is a way though.

Sadly it seems I don't have many options. From everything i've been reading, it is actually impossible to do it without some type of compression software.

There is this guy who seems to have figured out how to do it with a Linux server: http://badrra.wordpress.com/2009/06/08/game-streaming/

Since I don't want to port games to Linux for this, there are some other options...but they are all still in beta, at least by my standards.

Single Player Game Transmitter - SPGT - looks really promising, but it is not fully developed. Maybe it will be perfect in a year or two. It's based off a commercial program which requires logging in online and what not. SPGT looks to be better as an overall solution for graphics intensive screen sharing.

Being realistic, and wanting this HTPC sooner rather than later, I think I found my real option:
Buy a really long HDMI cable (or an HDMI to cat5) and just connect it from my server to my TV, and use a long range wireless keyboard/mouse set.
This would mean I could only play games on the TV though frown.gif

Still, if anyone has a working set up...please do share

Game streaming is extremely hard it would require extreme bandwidth and compression and decompression methods which then would require a lot of grunt from the CPU and gpu. So in turn would be as loud as normal maybe louder just install watercooling just for the gpu. Just an option to consider. smile.gif
