Underclocking...

Thread Starter
So since I got my rig back up and working I check the BIO's and looked at the temps of my Athlon X3 455 and it runs around 33(Idle) to 40+(load?) C. SO I will only be using this computer to run MMO's and most MMO's that I play only get about 2.7 GHz for good settings and the 455 is clocked at 3.3Ghz. Now I'm more looking at "endurance" the side of my rig. I only have 2 intake and 1 exhaust right now but I am planning on to add more once I get money. But for right now I want to put less stress on the CPU, I want to under clock the 455 to maybe 3.0Ghz (I know dropping .3Ghz is not much in terms of temp but I just want to avoid spikes of temps when I'm playing.) Can anyone direct me where to start off?

Your temps are fine. I wouldn't worry about underclocking. Hell, you have some decent head room to OVERCLOCK it! Unless you run it 60+ 24/7 you aren't going to make any real difference in the longevity of the chip.

You might want to look into unlocking that chip if your board supports it. You may be able to unlock it to a 4 core and run the same voltage and temps.

I ran my Athlon 3800+ at 76c for 4 years nonstop playing MMOs lol. Max temp was supposed to be less than that too. It still works fine. CPUs can take a beating.

totally unrelated to OP but the Z series are mATX and there only 2 8x:8x lanes on a 1155. go with the 2500k if it's purely gaming. or 2600k
