Does it have to be somthing on these forums, or can it be somthing computer related irl? (answered below)

I have multiple friends who have had barely enough money to get a gaming PC together, and I have switched alot of my parts around with them for free. Ive got a GTS 450 that I have borrowed, a gt 240, a gt 220, a couple of decent PSUs, a case, and CPU all loaned out because my friends couldent afford them.

In fact, one of my friends borrowed a motherboard and CPU from another friend. The way he returned it, the pins on the CPU got bent to all over the place. The friend that loaned him the mobo and CPU was (understandably) pissed that his CPU was trash. I happened to have an AM3 CPU laying around, so I told him not to worry about it and that I would give my CPU for compensation. It saved him from having to work up $90 to buy another one.

I hope that counts, haven't had time to do anything super crazy, as im only 16 :/

I really want this sound card, and have been wishing for one for awhile now, the onboard sound just ain't cutting it anymore :/

I'm going to get into this for somebody else, because I think it's better if I give my testimony of what he did than himself telling the story. Mainly because I don't believe he would take any kind of pride on what he did.

I have met tennobanzai when I bought from him an used ASUS 5870 ref model a year ago. I paid for the cheapest international shipping method available, he instead upgraded me to a faster one for nothing.

A month later, the package had still not arrived: it was stuck at customs because the faster shipping method he paid for called more attention and probably got it into a bigger line to be checked.
As an "apology" tenno asked me what could he do, what did I need from the US that could serve me and I couldn't find in Brazil.

The answer popped immediately into my head:

A football.

*A few months before I met him I discovered football, learned the rules and how the games works all by myself, and I was feeling a Brazilian born in the wrong place because all I could think about was football and not soccer*

So took his time to choose and purchase a football, deflate it, pack it and ship it to me, everything for free.

Our story didn't end there, and after the card arrived I used it for around 20 days until it started failing. This had nothing to do with tenno, but I had to RMA it. The problem is I had to send it to the US, it was the only way, but ASUS wouldn't ship it back to Brazil, not even if I paid for it, it's their policy.

I contacted tenno asking for help with the RMA, and completely lost, because I didn't know who could I trust to receive the card from me and then forward it to me.

He agreed on this complex logistics plan:
Card from Brazil > ASUS > tenno > military PO Box in the US > Argentina.

Yeah, that's right, Argentina. I had moved to Argentina for 10 months.

MY problem begun again when tenno asked his brother to drop it at the Post Office, since he already had to drop other packages there. He had the address on a note, but whoever was helping him at USPS was a rookie or something and didn't recognize the APO address, so he asked tenno's brother where was it, he only knew that the packages was gonna be sent to a Brazilian. What happened? The package went to an address in Brazil that doesn't exist (don't forget it's final destination was Argentina).

Then I waited. What did he do? He waited with me. Checking with USPS if they had something to say about it (I should have mentioned before, the was no tracking for this package, as it should have arrived at the APO 2 days after postage). And we kept in touch.

After a few months we gave up. Somebody had the card by then or it's gathering dust on a forgotten depot somewhere. By then I had joined a flag football team in Argentina and was starting to plan my way back to Brazil.

tenno suggested to buy a new card: he would help me to buy it: pack it, ship it and help me with the money! (I was stunned: I couldn't believe I wasn't on a complete loss of money and time after all this time).

He started by opening a wanted thread here on the marketplace and I did the same as well two weeks later because he was a little busy to deal with the offers.

It took a while but we found the perfect card and WE bought.

Now I'm back in Brazil. My team won the flag football tournament and I was the rookie of the year on their league, which opened the way for me to find a new team here in Brazil.
Yesterday he shipped the card. That very same day was a very important day for me: I wore shoulder pads and a football helmet for the first time. Did my first drills with it, cough the first passes wearing some armor and felt like a king *ME GUSTA*.

I should finally be able to run a crossfired 5870 setup, after all this time. About a year have passed since I met him.
Maybe this doesn't sound much for everybody, but he also helped me with some conversations about football and how he dealt with a long distance relationship - I'm right now starting a long distance relationship because I have met true love in Buenos Aires and I will now have to be patient to plan the future together with her.

I thank the guy who once sold me a video card and has a conversation of about a year with me here on OCN for all the support he gave me for my football dreams and the chats about hardware, chit chat and for telling me how was his experience on a long term relationship.

I'm sure he must have done something of much greater value to somebody else, but I really feel blessed for meeting somebody as honest and respectable as him. Every time I put on my cleats to play football I remember who gave me the opportunity to learn how to catch and throw a football biggrin.gif

So, I'm sure he has a shot at winning this sound card thumb.gif

TL;DR: it's a long text because it is a long story! And I kept some details out of it!

Well, there go my chances. Nice story man! thumb.gif

EDIT: I didn't realize that the the best entry gets the freebie - I just thought that was a requirement for entering and the winner would be chosen randomly.

It's nothing crazy long or major IMO, but my aunt's Pentium 4 Prescott laptop not only couldn't boot Windows, but was overheating (imagine that rolleyes.gif).

So I completely re-installed XP to see if it'd work - it did, but the CPU would actually throttle itself because of the overheating - even with the fans at full blast. So I tore the entire thing apart, cleaned out all the dust and cat hair clogging the heatsink, washed the casing & keyboard in the dish washer, applied some MX-2 to the CPU, and re-assembled it. Sure enough, the thing ran like a champ, and now the fans would even sometimes stop completely.

However, the HDD was only a 4200rpm disk. Even with my slimmed-down XP installation (which cut boot times to ~30 seconds), things were definitely slower than they should be (even with the page file disabled). So I allocated 96MB as an imaged RAMdisk with Firefox Portable on it, and sure enough it feels WAY faster now - as long as you're web browsing (which is pretty much all it can do anyway).

The only thing is that it ended a bit on a sour note when my mother was somewhat angry that I didn't get paid. Apparently I'm not allowed help someone just for kindness? >_>

Drove him to his Chemotherapy.
Helped him up the stairs,Walk when he was weak after the Chemotherapy, Bought his grocerys, took care of his cats, apt, cleaned, cooked, ect.
It was far from fun but it was worth it to know he is ok now and functioning all on his own.
And if you think im joking heres a pic of him when he fell out. Before they figured it out

About 10 years ago, there was a big flood in Houston (Tropical Storm Allison, dropped 40 inches of rain over night) where our house resided on Greens Bayou (drain off from Intercontinental airport), we had 5 feet of water in our home and the homes closest to the bayou had 9 feet and there was another street in between that I suppose got around 7. Basically, a whole neighborhood went under water. The water was so high we could barely get our boat out of the garage, we scouted with the boat to help people get out of the higher waters as the water current was really bad, the people on the back streets were not able to get out and many were on their roofs, thankfully we weren't the only ones out in boats helping these people get out, it was pretty hectic.

The water went down after around 20-30 hours, It took about 2-3 weeks before red cross even realized our neighbor was hit, so our whole neighbor was basically off the radar apparently. So everyones without vehicles and my old man got his truck going, so we were helping our neighbors out with clean water and food (we couldn't drink the well water as it was contaminated with Ecoli from the flooding). As for cleaning up our home, we had some family that drove a few hours to help us out so we had plenty of hands for our own home. However, there was a few older people around the neighborhood who weren't capable of clearing their own houses out and didn't have immediate family available to help them. My cousin and I started going basically house to house tending to these people, giving them food and water, salvaging what we could of their memories and making their homes somewhat liveable, tearing out carpet, walls so mold wouldn't begin to form and calculating their loses for FEMA and overall was caregivers until further aid could be provided. Was pretty crazy times, lived in a shell of a house for about a year, was rough for while but met alot of great people in my neighborhood that I otherwise never would've met. Looking back it was a good growing pain as a teenager, made me a better person no doubt about it. Majority of the people ended up moving away, about 60% of the homes were bought out by FEMA as majority didn't have insurance and were demolished. The whole area was "red tagged" meaning you had to either raise your home up 4 feet the air (atleast) or basically you couldn't live there anymore, it was a bit ridiculous considering it was a once in a 100 years type thing but that's the way it goes I guess.
