why is my ati card unstable at agp 8x

Thread Starter
Hi, ive got a radeon 9250 but it will only run in agp 4x mode which i have to select in rivatuner. If i run it at agp 8x then its very unstable and crashes as soon as i enter a 3d ap.

Ive got the latest via agp drivers which i heard could have been the problem. I know its not my power supply because its 500wat and got 18 amp on the 12 volt.

Any ideas because id prefer to run it at 8x so that i can sort my problem if i ever get an ati card again.

Nvidia cards are fine at 8x

I can't really answer you question directly but you should know that running in in 8X mode over 4X will provide 0% increase. Even the fastest AGP cards barely took advantage of 8X mode.

a 7800gs for performance it would %100 thrash the 9250 but if you are wanting to fix your agp prob then changing cards should work but if it doesnt then it could be your motherboard or a setting in the bios.

Yes it would make a difference if you had a 7800GS agp. That card is way more powerful than the rest of your system though so it would be better to do a full upgrade and go pci express. You would get a lot more for your money that way too.

To add to that your processer would bottleneck your graphics card. "hold it back". even some of the best processers out now still bottleneck some graphics cards from alot to a little. It would be in your intrest to spend around 1.3k to buy a new system and give that one to one of ur relatives. Oh and make sure to reformat it if you do Also some games you play will look 100x better becfause of cinfx 4.0 and shader model 3.0 etc over 2.0

the diffrence between 4x AGP and 8x AGP is nto much at all. Although they are backwards capatable, you would see a mere increase in performance, if not at all. Maybe 1FPS, but that 9250 cant handle much anyways.
