Upgrading CPU+Mobo+RAM

Thread Starter
I've finally decided to upgrade my sig rig. The processor is now 4 years old and is starting to show its age. But upgrading to any modern CPU will also mean getting a new motherboard and DDR3 RAM. My budget is about $600. I guess the big question is, Intel or AMD? I use this computer almost exclusively for gaming, so I probably don't need a 6 or 8 core, I would rather have a faster quad.

Oh yeah, I guess I will need a new cooling system too. I assume the Intel stock ones are still crap? I've gotten used to near silence with my Thermaltake Big Typhoon, any suggestions for a similar heat sink?

Typhoon will work with a milk overclock, but it really depends what voltages are needed. Some of the asrock boards use socket 775 with sandy bridge CPUs. So you may be able to re use it.

Ditch the ram tis only 1066mhz get some 1600mhz ram. Unless you do any video editing or somthin that uses a lot of threads stick with the i5 2500k and spend the extra money on a gpu upgrade. No need for a 2600k for gaming. This ram is better

Meh, I recommend this, but don't get the kit nor the extra 4GB RAM, 8GB is enough. Then use the money you saved to get yourself another card for SLI

just my 2 cents
