just my 2 cents

I'm sold on the 2500k. I've never messed with Crossfire, does it still use the card bridge? That might be a problem, because I have this huge honking thing on my card, it takes up 2 additional slots. Also, PCI-e 2.0 vs. 3.0, does it even matter?

Its an investment for future.
PCIe 3.0 achieves bandwidth ~1 GB/s in one direction on a single-lane (x1) configuration and scale to a total ~32 GB/s on a sixteen-lane (x16) configuration.
Yet in the Benchmark there are not much of a gains seen

Actually PCI-E 3.0 is still a proposal as there is no complaint hardware. Yes, Intel has incorporated PCI-E 3.0 capability into its Sandybridge E platform, but it has refrained from calling it PCI-E 3;.0 until the responding hardware (read video cards) arrive. There is speculation that the delay in the release of the next generation of video cards is the result of trying to be PCI-E 3.0 compliant.

PCI-E 3.0 like USB 3.0 lacks the hardware to take advantage of the bandwidth. SATA 3.0's bandwidth is used only by SSDs currently. All are future standards, but lack the hardware to fully utilize their advantages.

Hope that helped thumb.gif

This, but only get 2 dimms of that samsung. OC it to 1866mhz with decent timings and decent voltage.

Also IMO get an i3. It will suffice for a while until ivy bridge comes out then get yourself a 3770k of w/e the high end unlocked one is called. That'll last you 3-5 years (Y). You can also upgrade a gpu in a few months, and not worry about bandwidth with pcie gen 3 smile.gif.

Do you think it's worth waiting for Ivy Bridge? I don't need this upgrade today. In fact, I won't be getting it until I get my tax return, whenever that is.

Intel just delayed ivy becuse sandy bridge processors are not selling due to a soft global market and no AMD compatiton. Their talking maybe june now. If you can wait 5 months for 10-15% faster sure wait. But its hard to get a i5 2500k to bog down in games unless your running 2 7970 or 580's.

Well, here's my updated list, any further suggestions? I also looked at the ASRock Z68 Extreme 4 Gen3, but I couldn't tell what I would be getting for another $60. Also, low voltage RAM, I'm guessing it's better for overclocking, or should I get higher voltage with lower latencies?

If your RAM has low voltage, that means you can not only increase it's frequency but also tighten it's timings when a higher voltage is applied.
