oh god, i had this happen to me. i picked up a computer from a guy whose house had been struck by lightning. he had it on a surge protector, but the psu was still fried.
before i head out, i call him to tell him im otw, and he warns me that he's got "bugs" at his house. without thinking too much about it, i tell him that its fine because i'm just picking the case up.
when i get there, he's got the thing in a thick, black garbage bag. again, i didn't think much of it; i've picked up computers wrapped in towels, bubble wrap, paper, and more.
i got back to my house and brought the bag into my garage and left it for about 20 minutes. when i came back, i noticed a few small roaches crawling around the surface of the bag. i HATE roaches (seriously act like a female around them), but these were fairly small. still, at this point, i was beginning to realize that the "bugs" he had spoken of were probably not isolated to his house.
i put on elbow-length gloves, armed myself with raid and a boxcutter, and carried the thing out into my driveway, far from the house. i quickly slit the bag open from bottom to top and backed up. immediately, half a dozen large roaches and numerous small ones began rushing me (or at least thats how i remember it). i began screaming and stomping and spraying raid like a firehose. after a few minutes, i had gotten the bag stripped away and all the roaches on the outside of the case killed.
on the outside.
after using a 16in special purpose screwdriver to remove the thumbscrews to both sidepanels, i proceeded to tap the panels off at a distance with the same screwdriver. the open side wasn't so bad. a few came crawling out and were soon eRAIDicated. however, when i popped off the panel covering the back of the motherboard...all hell broke loose. there must have been hundreds of roaches piled in there. of course, as soon as i removed the panel, they immediately began crawling F***ING EVERYWHERE.
i hate to say it, but i ran away. like literally dropped the panel and beat a hasty retreat back towards the house, raid spraying behind me (the can was pretty much empty at this point).
i called the guy and told him i couldn't work on his computer. he asked me to bring it back to his house and i told him i couldn't do that either. fortunately, we were decent friends and he understood....
god i still get shivers remembering pulling the side panel off and seeing the reddish-brown mass rush out in all directions.....
