[MacRumors] Apple Releases First Developer Preview of OS X Mountain Lion, Public Launch in Late Summer - Page 3

I don't own a Mac, but I thought this looks kinda interesting been needing a new laptop and wanna try a new OS might give a Macbook something and OSX a try thumb.gif

Guys... Apple is a hardware company, Microsoft is a software company. Apple doesn't need to charge money for OSX because they've already made a healthy profit on the Mac. Microsoft on the other hand doesn't get anything from PC sales, so they have to make all of their profit from the OS.

In all fairness, could you tell me what applications or functionality the windows service packs have provided? I have never noticed anything over the years from 3.1-windows 7. Their service packs seem like just giant fixes for issues. Possibly some optimizations, but no new functionality.

Hi, I'm NOT a Mac user.

Here's a list of changes to XP that SP3 put in:

Network Access Protection
MMC 3.0
MSXML6
Windows Installer 3.1 v2
BITS 2.5
Simplified creation and maintenance of IPSec filters
Digital Identity Management Service
Peer Name Resolution 2.1
RDP 6.1
Wi-Fi Protected Access 2
"Black Hole" Router Detection
CredSSP Security Service Provider
Descriptive Security Options User Interface
Enhanced Security for Administrator and Service policy entries
Microsoft Cryptographic Module
No longer *require* product key during installation (This is a big deal)

Guys the point releases are the "service pack" equivalents.

10 is the major version
0-8 is the minor version
and .x is the point release or service pack.

So Os X 10.7.3 is the same as OS X Lion service pack 3

And macs tend to have more smaller point releases than windows does which is better IMO.

Edit: Windows and OS X both add features in service packs. Remember Windows 95 "OSR2" That was a biggy that gave us Fat 32 file systems for the first time and WinSock 2 so we could go online more better.

Lion is $30 for ALL Macs attached to your iTunes account. (I might add, I was primarily referring to the latter.)

This. You cant complain and say "look how expensive windows is". I paid about $110 for Windows 7 (100% legit copy), and its great. In addition, In addition, I can slap it onto ANY system I want. Not just Dell, not just HP, ANYTHING. Meanwhile Apple releases a fair amount of $30 x-packs, but they can ONLY be put on Mac computers (at least, thats what the EULA says). The price is being subsidized in the price of the computer.
