Not just Dell, not just HP, ANYTHING. Meanwhile Apple releases a fair amount of $30 x-packs, but they can ONLY be put on Mac computers (at least, thats what the EULA says). The price is being subsidized in the price of the computer.
That's somewhat true, but Macs being more expensive than the competition isn't really true anymore. It's not only one Mac either, you can put it on any of your Macs using the same Mac App Store account. When I'll upgrade, that means my folks can both install it on their Macs as well thumb.gif

Here's a list of changes to XP that SP3 put in:
Network Access Protection
MMC 3.0
MSXML6
Windows Installer 3.1 v2
BITS 2.5
Simplified creation and maintenance of IPSec filters
Digital Identity Management Service
Peer Name Resolution 2.1
RDP 6.1
Wi-Fi Protected Access 2
"Black Hole" Router Detection
CredSSP Security Service Provider
Descriptive Security Options User Interface
Enhanced Security for Administrator and Service policy entries
Microsoft Cryptographic Module
No longer *require* product key during installation (This is a big deal)
STRAIGHT FROM THE WHITEPAPER

Not sure what your point is here, but unfortunately it does not bring new end user features. Merely old Pre SP3 patches all packaged into a bundle and other additions to existing features. I wouldnt expect someone with SP3 to brag about WPA2 connectivity or RDP version 6.1.

"This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the operating system. " Ie, not to be interpreted as an "upgrade". More than half of those listed dont change the UI at all.

You are reaffirming service packs are not point upgrades like OS X's.

They've been doing it with games ever since digital downloads exploded in popularity, so why not do something similar for OSs? It's like a DLC, only you get it on a disc biggrin.gif Wait until they introduce micropayments for security fixes!

No disc tongue.gif

Mountain Lion is from the Mac App Store only.

So iOS was based on OSX. Now OCX is being build based on iOS. Very original.

It's more like iOS was based on OS X and now they're bringing the bests parts of iOS back to OS X.
