Hey Frickfrock to achieve that look you need a camera that can capture a very wide dynamic range, which is why most astro timelapse is shot on DSLR's or high end cinema cameras like RED. Any DSLR will do, But the larger sensors with higher iso abilities will be your best bet. A lens is very key in this. You want the fastest lens you can afford, someting with a 2.8 aperture or less. Then you need an intervalometer. these can be had on amazon for 30 bux or less. Shoot with the highest iso that you can without producing noise.

check out http://forum.timescapes.org/phpBB3/index.php

and while your there look at Tom Lowe's trailor for Timescapes

Thats a forum dedicated to timelapse, and you will learn a lot there. smile.gif

Canon point and shoots will work too with Magic Lantern i think, but they wont produce the quality a dslr will. If I was looking for an entry level camera for timelapse I would go 60D or 7D with the Canon loyalty program. And I hate to say it (got a d90) but Canon is winning the timelapse race. Canon bodies can be bulb ramped (for night to day shots). Nikon bodies bulb mode is rounded to the nearest 125ms, 40ms, etc depending on body, producing flicker. While Canon bodies expose for the exact input time.
